Fossacesia Marina is an Abruzzo beach on the Costa dei Trabocchi, ridden by kiters and windsurfers off the seafront. It works year-round on NW, and on spring mornings under high pressure it can put up a 15-18 knot thermal.
The water is chop and small waves over sand, clean and tide independent, with wave breakers to keep track of and a beach that fills with sunbathers in June, July and August.
The catch here is legal, and it is recent: a 2025 reorganisation of the seafront created a windsurf and SUP area where kitesurf is expressly prohibited, and the kite zone that used to sit in the southern Lido Galetta concession was not reconfirmed.
That leaves Fossacesia Marina with no municipal kitesurf launch area anyone can point at for 2026. Ride it on current signage or with a local school, and note that the Abruzzo bathing period runs 1 June to 13 September 2026, which is exactly when the question bites.

About 15-18 kt for the spring morning thermal under high pressure.

Works year-round on NW, with a 15-18 kt spring morning thermal on some high-pressure days. Beyond that the wind character here is undocumented.
Year-round NW, plus the spring thermal on some high-pressure mornings. There are wetsuit and warm-season notes but no month-by-month wind figures.

Direction to shore

NW is the direction that works and it runs along this beach rather than into it, cross-shore, with an offshore edge where the coast bends. N and NE come in onshore and with real strength, but they leave the sea disorganised. Close to the sand the wind is gusty whatever the direction.

Dominant direction

NW. No other direction is documented for this beach.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

May-September runs 20-38 C and lycra does the job; October-May is 5-20 C and you want a wetsuit. August water averages 26.7 C, and the coldest sea sits around 13-14 C near 1 March.

Chop and small waves, clean water, a sandy medium beach and a wave breaker hazard. Conditions can suit slalom or wave riding depending on wind strength.

Beginner, intermediate and expert are all listed. A beginner still has the wave breakers, the June-August sunbathers and the unsettled question of where a kite may legally launch to deal with.

Rescue

Nothing kite-specific exists. Bathing assistance on the concessions, and on the free beaches through the comune, runs only in the periods and hours fixed each year by the maritime authority's safety ordinance; the 2026 bathing period is 23 May to 20 September. Outside that window, and outside those daily hours, there is nobody on the beach for you.

Launch

Long sandy beach on the Fossacesia Marina lungomare, with parking along the seafront - free most of the year, scarce and paid in summer - free showers, and bars and restaurants a short walk away. The shorebreak makes getting in and out the awkward part on almost any day.

  • summer sunbathers
  • many sunbathers in June, July and August
  • possible shorebreak or small waves on stronger days
  • authorized kite launch status unconfirmed after the 2025 windsurf and SUP area news

  • insidious shorebreak that makes entry and exit hard on gear and rider
  • disorganised, chaotic sea on N and NE
Rules & access
2025 Fossacesia municipal news confirms kitesurf is expressly prohibited inside the new dedicated windsurf and SUP launch area, and the same reorganization did not reconfirm the previously designated kitesurf zone in the southern Lido Galetta concession, so no municipal-authorized kitesurf launch area at Fossacesia Marina was found for 2026; check locally before rigging.
Regione Abruzzo's 2026 bathing ordinance sets the bathing season from 11 March to 23 November 2026 and the bathing period from 23 May to 20 September 2026, and from 11 March 2026 to 10 March 2027 forbids leaving craft and equipment on the maritime public beach - surf, windsurf and kitesurf named among them - except in racks or in areas specifically set aside or written into a concession title.
That same ordinance leaves the launch corridors, the 5 m strip from the waterline and the rescue arrangements to the maritime authority's 2026 safety ordinance, so the corridor a kiter actually needs is set by the Capitaneria rather than by the region.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the launch you plan to use is actually kite-authorized; the 2025 windsurf and SUP area excludes kites outright.
  • Watch spring high-pressure mornings for the 15-18 kt thermal.
  • When NW turns too offshore at Fossacesia, riders move to Casalbordino instead.
  • In June-August keep the launch well away from the bathers and give the wave breakers a wide berth.
  • The shorebreak is what breaks gear here. Time your entry and your exit rather than walking in on the first set that arrives.
  • N and NE blow onshore and hard, but the water underneath goes messy with them.
  • Do not leave kites and bars lying on the sand: since 11 March 2026 gear may only sit in racks or in areas set aside for it.
