When it fills in

There is no daily thermal clock. The wind arrives with the weather system, so a working day can be blowing at first light or fill in at midday and hold until the front has gone through; equally it can drop out mid-afternoon when the system moves on. The chart tells you more than the hour does. No local onset or drop-off times are published.

Marina di Vasto is a long sandy beach below Vasto in Abruzzo, ridden on kite, windsurf and wingfoil. The water is shallow and tide-independent, chop and small waves breaking over sandbars. The wind comes with the fronts: Scirocco, Levante, Garbino, Maestrale and Tramontana, roughly 8-30 knots depending on which one shows up.
The coast angle turns Scirocco more onshore here, which is why shore break is part of the deal. Coastal currents and swimmers add to that, and Bora blows offshore. The real seasonal problem is people: in June, July and August the beach is packed and you are hunting for a gap.
It works for most riders in moderate wind, but on an offshore, current or shore-break day a beginner should be with a school or off the water.

Typical strength

Scirocco 10-25 kt, Levante 10-25 kt, Garbino 10-25 kt, Maestrale 10-30 kt, Tramontana 8-30 kt.

Clean water. The wind arrives with weather systems rather than a daily thermal.
June, July and August are the crowded months. Abruzzo's 2026 bathing period runs 23 May to 20 September, inside a beach season of 11 March to 23 November. The best days come with a passing depression rather than with the calendar, and the fourth-quadrant winds, Maestrale and Tramontana, are the ones that deliver.

The quiver, in words

No local figures are published. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider, worked from the reported 8-30 kt spread: 12 m at 12-15 kt, 9-10 m at 18-22 kt, 7 m or under when Maestrale or Tramontana push past 25 kt.The range inside one frontal day is wide here, so pick for the top of the forecast rather than the average.

Direction to shore

The coast angle makes Scirocco more onshore. Bora blows offshore here and is treated as a hazard. Working wind is reported from SE, E, NW and N.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Shallow over sand, with sandbars close enough in to stand on when it is calm. No measured distance has been published, and tide does not move it. On a swell day those same bars are where the small waves break.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

26.4°C summer · 12.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Lycra is typical from May to September and wetsuit from October to May; Vasto water temperatures average about 26.4-26.7 C in August and about 12.4 C in February.

Currents

Coastal currents are listed as a hazard.

Your level

Rated for every level in one place and intermediate in another. Intermediate is the honest reading, given the currents, shore break, offshore wind and summer swimmers.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue and no rescue boat identified. Through the bathing period, 23 May to 20 September in 2026, the bathing beaches carry lifeguard cover aimed at swimmers; outside that window there is nobody. For an emergency at sea the free Coast Guard number is 1530, and 112 also reaches it.
On an offshore Bora day there is no one to come and get you, which is the whole argument against riding it.

Launch

Long sandy beach at Vasto Marina, reached by car from the A14 Vasto exit or the SS16, with parking along the seafront, paid in summer, and a short walk to the sand. Locally the place is Vasto Marina; it also turns up as Kite Beach Vasto and as Marina di Vasto, and all three are the same beach.

Rules & access
2026 Abruzzo bathing ordinance defines the 2026 beach season as 11 March to 23 November and the bathing period as 23 May to 20 September; it requires users and operators to follow the competent maritime authority safety ordinance. No Marina di Vasto kite-specific municipal corridor rule is published.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the day before you pump: clean onshore or cross-onshore is fine, offshore Bora and current days are not.
  • Watch the shallow sandbars. The small waves break on them without warning.
  • In June, July and August, stay out of the bathing areas unless a kite corridor or school zone is clearly marked.
  • Come off the A14 at the Vasto exit or along the SS16; there is parking and a short walk to the sand.
  • Parking on the seafront is paid in summer; budget for it or walk further.
  • Save 1530, the free Coast Guard number for emergencies at sea. Nobody here is running a rescue boat for kiters.
