On the clock

08:00

No thermal cycle to wait for. The N, NW and NE events that make this beach work are synoptic: they can be up at 08:00 and gone by noon, or hold all day. Timing comes off the forecast, not off a daily pattern, and no diurnal onset has been measured here.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Sandy Adriatic beach north of Termoli's port: tide independent, chop, small to medium waves, with Maestrale and Tramontana the winds that make it work. Bora from the northeast comes in onshore and choppy. Scirocco from the southeast is offshore and can run current, so leave it alone unless you have local safety cover.
The name moves: access is described about 3 km north of the castle just past a gas station, safety-minded riders reportedly use a launch 10 km west of town when the wind is north-westerly, and Kitebeach Termoli also gets pinned at Petacciato.
The spot is real, the atlas point is approximate, and you should confirm the access with somebody local before you drive to a coordinate. Accounts of the launch itself conflict too, small in some, wide with room for lines in others.
It is gentler than Rio Vivo in principle, but the breakwaters, the marked summer swim zones and that access uncertainty keep it from being a simple open beach. Water sits around 26.4 C in August and 12.4 C in February; May to September is the window, and July and August are when the sand fills up.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, scaled from the 11-19 kt band recorded for Termoli rather than from local session records: a 75-85 kg rider is on 12-14 m at the bottom of that band, 10-12 m through the middle, 8-9 m when a Tramontana or Bora event pushes past 20 kt. No local kite-size range is published.

Direction to shore

Tramontana (N/NW) and Maestrale (NW) are cross-shore to cross-onshore; Bora (NE) is onshore and choppy; Scirocco (SE) is offshore.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No depth profile is published for this stretch of sand. In season there is one usable marker: through the 2026 bathing season, which runs to 15 October, each bathing structure must mark the 1 m depth contour in front of it with shore signs or a line of white buoys, so the waist-deep line is visible from the beach. Outside those months you read the water yourself.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

26.4°C summer · 12.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Reported as shorts in summer, shorty in spring and autumn, normal wetsuit in winter; Termoli water temperatures average about 26.4-26.7 C in August and about 12.0-12.4 C in February.

Currents

Possible currents in Scirocco wind.

Ratings conflict: any level in one place, intermediate only in another. Beginners should be with a school or under local supervision, because the launch point, the breakwaters and the summer swim zones all matter here.

Rescue

No kite-specific rescue. Cover on the sand is the bathing-structure lifeguard service, which under the 2026 Termoli safety ordinance runs 22 May to 13 September, 09:00 to 19:00, with at least one qualified assistant per 150 m of seafront or fraction of it. Outside that window and those hours nobody is watching.
For an emergency at sea call 1530, the free coastguard blue number, or 112. The Capitaneria di porto di Termoli is at Viale della Guardia Costiera 38 on 0875 706484, open to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday 09:00-12:00 and Tuesday and Thursday 09:00-12:00 and 15:00-16:30.

Launch

Sandy beach with parking, about 3 km north of the castle just past a gas station. The same Kitebeach name also gets attached to beaches farther west and northwest toward Petacciato, so settle which one you want before you drive.

  • wave breakers
  • summer beach users
  • proximity of port and maritime traffic
  • possible currents in Scirocco
  • summer swimmers and marked swimming zones
  • uncertain exact public launch point
  • no published kite launch corridor, so the 300 m bathing band is closed to kite transit from May to mid-October
  • no lifeguard cover outside 22 May to 13 September, 09:00-19:00
Rules & access
2026 Termoli safety ordinance, signed 8 May 2026 and running to 15 October: the sea within 300 m of the waterline off a beach is reserved for bathers, and inside that band the transit of any craft, windsurf and kitesurf included, is prohibited. Take-off and landing across it are legal only through an authorised launch corridor.
A kite corridor must run at least 500 m seaward, be 30 m wide at the waterline, widen to 80 m by 250 m out and hold that width to 500 m, be delimited by yellow or orange buoys on a floating line at intervals of 20 m over the first 100 m and 50 m after that, carry white flags on the outermost buoys and a sign at the beach entrance reading DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE - RISERVATO AL TRANSITO DEI NATANTI.
A concessionaire needs a permit from the Comune and must tell the Capitaneria di porto di Termoli the date it goes in; for free beaches the Comune does the notifying. No corridor is published for this beach, so between May and October assume you launch outside the marked bathing zone or not at all.
2026 Molise bathing ordinance: the regional bathing season runs 1 April to 15 October, a 5 m strip from the waterline stays free for transit through the season, and beach sports events need authorisation.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ask a local rider which Kitebeach access is actually in use before you set a coordinate: 3 km north of the castle and 10 km west of town are both described.
  • Park along the lungomare north of the port, where the beach access is direct.
  • Take the N and NW days; skip Scirocco unless somebody competent is on the beach with you.
  • In July and August, launch clear of the marked swim zones and well away from the breakwaters.
  • From May to mid-October the first 300 m off the beach is bathing water and closed to kite transit, and no launch corridor is published here; ride the shoulder months if you want the beach to yourself legally.
  • The white buoys or shore signs you see in season mark the 1 m depth line in front of each concession, which is the only depth marker you get.

Getting there

Airport

Pescara Abruzzo Airport (PSR) is the practical regional arrival, 82.6 km from Termoli station. San Domino Island is closer as the crow flies but is not the mainland airport you fly into with kite bags.

Route

Drive the coast road between Termoli and Petacciato, park, then a short walk to the sand. There is also parking along the lungomare north of the port with direct beach access.

FAQ

Is Termoli Kite Beach suitable for beginners?

Sources vary, with some listing it for any level and others requiring intermediate skill, so beginners should use a school or local supervision given the breakwaters and summer swim zones.

What is the wind like?

Maestrale and Tramontana from the north and north-west are the dominant winds, reported around 11 to 19 knots, best from May to September.

What hazards should riders know about?

Hazards include wave breakers, summer beach users and swim zones, nearby port traffic, and an uncertain exact public launch point.

Are there rules or restricted zones?

The 2026 Molise bathing ordinance runs from 1 April to 15 October, keeping a 5 m strip from the waterline free for transit, and Termoli's 2026 Coast Guard ordinance refers kite activity to current local rules.
