Good to know before you go3
- Rio Vivo's waves wrap around the harbour wall right next to a working port — a spot that rewards local knowledge of where the harbour traffic boundary is.
- Termoli Kite Beach parking is free off-season and paid in summer, with designated swimming zones to respect in high season.
- Wind-direction descriptions for Campomarino Lido conflict between sources (southeast for freestyle versus northwest) — worth confirming locally before planning a session there.
The spots
Campomarino Lido
Campomarino Lido is a real kite and wingfoil beach on the Molise coast, sand the whole way, south-east of Termoli.
intermediateadvancedIn seasonMay to Sep
The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 11.9 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Campomarino Lido: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Campomarino Lido
Two working directions are given for it, south-easterly Scirocco and northwest Maestrale, and they have never been reconciled; no typical knots figure exists for the launch either. Behind the wave breakers the water goes flat, outside them it is chop and small waves. Off-season the beach is wide and mostly empty. In summer it is not: the 2026 Termoli Coast Guard ordinance keeps the first 300 m for bathers and allows kite launch and transit only through an authorized corridor, which has to run 500 m offshore and be 30 m wide at the shoreline, and whether one is actually installed here is unconfirmed. Documentation for this beach is thinner than for the Lazio spots, so the exact launch stays a local question. May, June and September give you the most beach for the least argument.
Getting on the water
Long sandy beach at Campomarino Lido, broken up in places by wave breakers that also shelter the water behind them. Parking is free along the coast road and paid near the lidos in summer, and the beach clubs behind the sand have showers and food.
If it goes wrong
Nothing kite-specific. From 22 May to 13 September 2026, between 09:00 and 19:00, the beach concessions along this coast are required to run an organised lifeguard and rescue service, so on a summer day the nearest help is the assistente bagnanti at the lido you launched in front of. Outside that window there is none. At sea the number is 1530, the coastguard's free emergency line, or 112.
Room to rig
large off-season; constrained by swimmers and authorized zones in summer
Rules and access
From the date of the 2026 Termoli coastguard safety ordinance until 15 October 2026, the first 300 m from the shoreline is reserved for bathers along this whole stretch, and transit by any craft, windsurf and kitesurf included, is banned inside it; launching and landing are allowed only through an authorised launch corridor. A kite corridor must run at least 500 m offshore, be 30 m wide at the water's edge and widen to 80 m from 250 m out to 500 m, be marked with yellow or orange buoys joined by a floating line at intervals of no more than 20 m over the first 100 m and 50 m beyond that, carry white flags on the outermost buoys at the seaward mouth, and be signed ashore 'DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE - RISERVATO AL TRANSITO DEI NATANTI'. The concession holder has to get the corridor authorised by the comune and tell the Termoli coastguard when it is laid; whether one exists at Campomarino Lido in 2026 is unconfirmed. Beach concessions must provide lifeguard cover from 22 May to 13 September 2026, 09:00 to 19:00. The 2026 Regione Molise ordinance sets the bathing season from 1 April to 15 October.
Rio Vivo
Rio Vivo, the beach immediately south of Termoli harbour in Molise, starts working when the wind turns north.

Rio Vivo: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Rio Vivo
The harbour wall bends the swell so it wraps onto sand instead of closing out, and on a clean north to north-east day the waves can run to around 2 m, which for the mid-Adriatic is unusual. Where you sit on the beach decides the session: under the port the waves are smaller and damped, and by the southern rocks they get steeper and longer and a lot more demanding. N and NNW come in side to side-off from the left, so a broken line here means a swim toward rocks rather than a walk back up the sand. Winter brings the bigger days. The Molise bathing season runs 1 April to 15 October, when a 5 m strip from the waterline stays clear for transit and the beach fills with swimmers and services. A strong northern forecast pulls riders in from Abruzzo and farther, so the good days are busy water. Intermediates and wave riders who can look after themselves will like it; beginners should learn somewhere else.
Getting on the water
Free beach on Lungomare Sud / Rio Vivo below the harbour, near Circolo della Vela. Large open parking area on the square facing the sand. In summer the beach concessions run and everything is serviced; out of season it is an empty beach with nobody on it.
If it goes wrong
No dedicated kite rescue. The cover on the beach is the lifesaving service the Coast Guard makes compulsory on the concessions from 22 May to 13 September 2026, 09:00 to 19:00, and outside those dates and hours there is nothing on the sand at all: the winter northerlies that make this spot work fall entirely outside it. Each station has to carry two ring buoys on 25 m lines, a rescue craft marked SALVATAGGIO parked near the waterline, and red, yellow and green flags on a four-metre mast. At sea the number is 1530, the Coast Guard blue number, or 112. The Termoli Capitaneria di porto is on Viale della Guardia Costiera 38 and answers on 0875 706484.
Rules and access
The Termoli Coast Guard bathing safety ordinance for 2026, which replaces and abrogates ordinance 11/2025, reserves the sea within 300 m of the waterline for bathers from the date it was issued until 15 October. Inside that strip the transit of any craft, windsurfs and kitesurfs named explicitly, is banned, and launching or landing a kite is allowed only through a marked launch corridor (art. 4.5). A corridor usable by kites must run at least 500 m offshore, be 30 m wide at the waterline and 80 m wide from 250 m out to 500 m, be edged with yellow or orange buoys on a floating line, carry white flags on the outermost buoys at the seaward mouth and a sign ashore reading DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE - RISERVATO AL TRANSITO DEI NATANTI (art. 9). Bathing is banned within 200 m of the harbour mouth and the outer harbour works, which is the water immediately north of Rio Vivo, within 3 m of breakwaters and groynes, and within 50 m either side of a navigable river mouth (art. 5). Beach concessions must keep a 5 m strip from the waterline clear of gear for transit (art. 7.2). Article 11 refers kitesurfing and the other sea activities to applicable law and the standing Termoli Coast Guard ordinances. The 2026 Molise regional bathing ordinance sets the regional bathing season from 1 April to 15 October and requires authorization for beach sports events.
Termoli Kite Beach
Sandy Adriatic beach north of Termoli's port: tide independent, chop, small to medium waves, with Maestrale and Tramontana the winds that make it work.

Termoli Kite Beach: the long version, the launch and the rules

Bora from the northeast comes in onshore and choppy. Scirocco from the southeast is offshore and can run current, so leave it alone unless you have local safety cover. The name moves: access is described about 3 km north of the castle just past a gas station, safety-minded riders reportedly use a launch 10 km west of town when the wind is north-westerly, and Kitebeach Termoli also gets pinned at Petacciato. Accounts of the launch itself conflict too, small in some, wide with room for lines in others. It is gentler than Rio Vivo in principle, but the breakwaters, the marked summer swim zones and that access uncertainty keep it from being a simple open beach. Water sits around 26.4 C in August and 12.4 C in February; May to September is the window, and July and August are when the sand fills up.
Getting on the water
Sandy beach with parking, about 3 km north of the castle just past a gas station. The same Kitebeach name also gets attached to beaches farther west and northwest toward Petacciato, so settle which one you want before you drive.
If it goes wrong
No kite-specific rescue. Cover on the sand is the bathing-structure lifeguard service, which under the 2026 Termoli safety ordinance runs 22 May to 13 September, 09:00 to 19:00, with at least one qualified assistant per 150 m of seafront or fraction of it. Outside that window and those hours nobody is watching. For an emergency at sea call 1530, the free coastguard blue number, or 112. The Capitaneria di porto di Termoli is at Viale della Guardia Costiera 38 on 0875 706484, open to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday 09:00-12:00 and Tuesday and Thursday 09:00-12:00 and 15:00-16:30.
Rules and access
2026 Termoli safety ordinance, signed 8 May 2026 and running to 15 October: the sea within 300 m of the waterline off a beach is reserved for bathers, and inside that band the transit of any craft, windsurf and kitesurf included, is prohibited. Take-off and landing across it are legal only through an authorised launch corridor. A kite corridor must run at least 500 m seaward, be 30 m wide at the waterline, widen to 80 m by 250 m out and hold that width to 500 m, be delimited by yellow or orange buoys on a floating line at intervals of 20 m over the first 100 m and 50 m after that, carry white flags on the outermost buoys and a sign at the beach entrance reading DIVIETO DI BALNEAZIONE - RISERVATO AL TRANSITO DEI NATANTI. A concessionaire needs a permit from the Comune and must tell the Capitaneria di porto di Termoli the date it goes in; for free beaches the Comune does the notifying. No corridor is published for this beach, so between May and October assume you launch outside the marked bathing zone or not at all. 2026 Molise bathing ordinance: the regional bathing season runs 1 April to 15 October, a 5 m strip from the waterline stays free for transit through the season, and beach sports events need authorisation.

What riders say
5 recurring claims
The main kite beach is a practical local launch north of the port, with parking and food nearby, but riders keep being reminded about wavebreakers and the port side of the setup.
consensus×4 riders
North and northwest winds are the useful default; southeast can be offshore and stronger than it looks friendly from town.
majority×3 riders
Summer is usable but cluttered: July and August bring beach users, paid parking can appear, and marked swimming zones need respecting.
majority×3 riders
Rio Vivo is known locally as a watersports beach, but general beach reviews are lukewarm, so riders should expect a functional town beach rather than a polished kite resort.
majority×3 riders
Campomarino is the less forgiving side trip: access has been made awkward by new construction, and without a mole calming the water, current and waves are more serious than Rio Vivo.
