2 spots

Two very different bases bookend Chania town — Kalyves to the east is a quiet Apokoronas fishing village next to an atmospheric ancient site, Platanias to the west is a built-up, Scandinavian-charter-heavy strip of hotels, restaurants and nightclubs.
Neither spot is a kite-only draw, so this reads as "come for Chania and its coastline, kite as one of several activities" rather than a dedicated kite-trip crowd.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go2

  • Platanias and Kalyves sit on opposite sides of Chania, each roughly 30 minutes' drive from the airport in a different direction — treat them as two separate bases, not a single day-trippable pair.
  • Platanias's tourist-strip character (hotels, nightclubs, souvenir shops, strong Scandinavian package-tourism presence) is a different holiday register from the quiet, local feel of Kalyves — pick a base to match what you actually want the evenings to feel like.

The spots

  1. Kalami Beach (Kalyves)

    mixed

Kalami is the beach below Aptera, beside Kalyves on the Chania coast, and it is quiet in a way the busier Crete spots are not.

    intermediateadvanced

In seasonno month named for this spot

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 12.8 kt in March, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Kalami Beach (Kalyves): the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Kalami Beach (Kalyves)

Two beaches with the Xidas river mouth between them, shallow sand near shore, water flat to slightly choppy. The wind is the problem: patchy rather than reliable, and one two-day check showed only 1-8 knots, a snapshot rather than a seasonal average. That puts it with intermediate and advanced riders who can take what turns up, not with first-timers and not with anyone planning a trip around it. There is a mole by the harbour, and the river outlet changes the water temperature where it comes out. No kite or wing school was confirmed at Kalami or Kalyves; the Chania-area schools sit at Elafonisi, Agia Marina and Falassarna.

    Getting on the water

Parking along and near the beach, then a short walk straight onto the sand. Cafes and tavernas line the back of the beach; sunbeds, umbrellas, showers and toilets in season.

    If it goes wrong

Lifeguards work the organised beach in the swimming season and they are there for swimmers, not for kiters. No rescue boat is on call for riders and no kite rescue exists. Emergency number 112.

    Room to rig

The western beach is long and wide, a little over a kilometre, and never feels crowded. The eastern beach is about 300 m and sits right by the village, so it fills first. Easy parking along and near both.

    Rules and access

No municipal or beach-specific kite rule was found for Kalyves as of 2026. The national General Port Regulation No. 20 (Government Gazette B' 444 of 26 April 1999, the instrument still in force after later amendments) applies along this coast: no riding before sunrise or after sunset; at least 200 m off the shoreline and 200 m from swimmers, anchored boats, buoys and obstacles; no further out than 1 nautical mile; 1 nautical mile clear of port and marina entrances, which the local port authority can reduce to 500 m; a clear 100 m radius at the launch. Helmet, harness with hook, line-cutting knife, quick-release and flotation are compulsory, and a wetsuit is compulsory from 15 October to 15 May. Under-16s may not ride; 14 and 15 with parental consent, swimming ability and supervision. Above 6 Beaufort without lifeguard cover, or in onshore wind with no motorised rescue craft nearby, riding is not allowed.

  2. Platanias (Chania)

chop · beginner ok · cross

Platanias is 10 km west of Chania on Crete's north coast, a package-tourism village of hotels, bars and nightclubs that runs April to October and fills mostly with Northern European visitors.

    In seasonFeb to Mar

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 14.1 kt in January, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Platanias (Chania): the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Platanias (Chania)

The kite-usable part is not that: a quieter sandy run bordered by agricultural fields and the coastal road. Wind is the problem here. Across the year only around 8% of days produce a usable 12-35 knot range, the average sits at 6-7 knots, and what does arrive tends to be gusty. February and March are the least unreliable at 12-13% of days in range, while June through August, the region's tourist high season, are the weakest for wind. When it fills in it comes from the east, side-shore along a coastline running roughly east-west, over shallow water that turns to rough chop rather than clean swell. Water goes from about 16°C in February to 27°C in August. Ride here because you are already in Chania and the forecast surprised you, not because you booked a kite trip.

    Getting on the water

A sandy stretch bordered by agricultural fields and the coastal road, a quieter section of the long Platanias beach away from the built-up resort core.

    If it goes wrong

Nothing organised. No lifeguard, patrol boat or paid recovery is documented for the kite stretch. The coast guard answers on 108, and 112 reaches the same system; no call-out cost is published. The national rules make the gap concrete: above Beaufort 6 you may only ride with a lifeguard and a motor boat present, so the strongest days here are not legally rideable on your own.

    Rules and access

2026: no Platanias- or Chania-specific municipal kitesurfing ordinance was found; the Greek national kitesurfing regulation applies coast-wide — no kiting before sunrise or after sunset, minimum 200 m from swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, reefs and other obstacles, no closer than 200 m to shore except beyond the marked swim-zone buoys, no farther than 1 nautical mile offshore, minimum 1 nautical mile from ports/marinas/fish farms (reducible to 500 m by local committee decision), a clear 100 m launch radius, mandatory safety gear (helmet, harness with hook, line-cutting knife, quick-release leash, buoyancy vest, kite and board leashes), wetsuits required 15 October–15 May, riding above Beaufort 6 permitted only with a lifeguard and motor boat present, and no kiting under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    Everything on Platanias (Chania)

Getting there & around

  • Chania International Airport 'Daskalogiannis' (CHQ) — roughly 30 minutes by car from Kalyves and a similar drive from Platanias on the other side of Chania
Car neededyes
TransfersA taxi from the airport into Chania runs about €25 (20 minutes); the city bus costs around €2.50 with tickets bought from the driver, cash or card. Frequent KTEL buses connect Kalyves to Chania and on toward Rethymno; Platanias, sitting on the main west-coast tourist strip, has even denser local bus coverage.Public transport in the wider region is generally described as frequent and reliable, but a rental car still opens up day trips and lets you chase wind between the two spots on your own timing.
Road quirksHighway E75 runs along the north coast past Chania's southern outskirts; the older parallel road (still numbered 90) is the main route through the small resort villages west of the city, including Platanias. A car is not recommended for getting around central Chania itself — parking is difficult and much of the Old Town is car-free.

Practical

LanguageGreek; English is standard in Chania's tourism industry, especially in Platanias given its heavy Scandinavian and wider European charter-tourist traffic.
MoneyEuro.
VisaGreece is in the Schengen Area; standard Schengen rules apply for non-EU visitors.
Seasons beyond windSummer (April-October) is hot and dry with clear skies, occasionally relieved by the seasonal Meltemi breeze; winters are mild with relatively little rain but high humidity. Platanias's tourist season runs April to October specifically; Kalyves likely follows a similar general swimming season but this isn't independently confirmed for the village itself.

Scene & life

VibeSplit personality: Platanias is loud, resort-strip, Scandinavian-package-holiday energy; Kalyves is a working village that goes quiet at night; Chania's Old Town in between has the real bar and restaurant density and stays lively into the evening.
Must try
  • Cretan taverna cooking generally — olive oil, honey and fresh seafood are the region's signature products
  • Italian-leaning menus are common in Platanias specifically, alongside the standard Greek/Cretan options
Activities
  • Aptera, the ancient hilltop city-state site a few minutes inland from Kalyves — a Doric temple, Roman baths, an ancient theatre and views over Souda Bay and the White Mountains
  • Chania's Venetian Old Town, harbour and fortifications
  • The Archaeological Museum of Chania
  • Samaria Gorge, a well-known day trip from the Chania area
Day trips
  • Chania Old Town (short drive from both spots)
  • Rethymno, further east along the coast
  • Heraklion, Crete's capital, for a longer day out
Pairs withA few days based in Chania's Old Town covers the culture and food side properly; the White Mountains behind the coast are the backdrop for Crete's serious hiking, including the Samaria Gorge.
Après-kite
  • Platanias's hotel-strip restaurants and bars
  • Chania's Old Town and Venetian harbour restaurant row

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Aptera, the ancient city just inland from Kalyves, gets its name ('wingless') from a Greek myth: after losing a music contest to the Muses, the Sirens supposedly plucked the feathers from their own wings in despair and threw themselves into the sea.
  • Chania was the capital of the short-lived, semi-autonomous Cretan State (1898-1913) before the island's union with Greece, and was the birthplace of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of modern Greece's most influential political figures.
  • Chania's Old Town layout — Venetian fortifications from 1538, an Ottoman-era mosque on the harbour, a former Jewish quarter — reflects successive Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman rule stretching back to a Minoan settlement called Kydonia, one of six Minoan Palatial Centres now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Itinerary idea

Base centrally in Chania's Old Town if you want to chase wind between both spots and still have a real evening scene; pick Kalyves for quiet or Platanias for resort convenience if you already know which spot you'll be riding most.
