Falassarna is a long, exposed west-Crete beach near Platanos and Kissamos: roughly 3 km of coast broken into sandy sections with rocks and dunes between them. The main beach has organized services and water sports and sits inside a Natura 2000 area.
It rides best in winter and spring, when S/SW systems bring wind and waves; in summer the prevailing north wind is gusty and effectively offshore there, and riders use the small bay by the port instead.
Reportedly the June-September NW/NNW Meltemi is side-onshore and reliable enough on this coast, which does not match how the main beach behaves in summer, so the warm-season picture stays unresolved. Skip it if you are learning. Chop, shorebreak, big waves in strong S/SW and rocks at the bay ends put this at intermediate and above.
The waves do not break progressively and the exits are rocky.

gusty in south winds; summer reliability is unresolved
The main beach is ridable mostly in winter and spring, when S/SW systems bring wind on about 4-5 days a month at roughly Beaufort 4-7. The prevailing summer north wind is extremely gusty and effectively offshore on the exposed main beach, so the small bay near the harbor is the practical summer alternative.
A reliable June-September NW/NNW Meltemi on the open beach is unconfirmed and does not fit the way the main beach behaves in summer.

Direction to shore

SW is side-onshore and S is sideshore; NW/NNW Meltemi is also given as side-onshore to side-shore on this west-facing coast, unconfirmed.

Dominant direction

N, S, SSW and SW historically; more recently NW/NNW Meltemi.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2020-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Falassarna reads as an any-ability beach on paper. It is not: shorebreak, rocks, gusty or offshore wind and big waves are all in play. Ride it at intermediate or above, and drop to the small harbor bay when the main beach is unsuitable.

Launch

The main beach is long and wide. In summer most riders use the small bay near the port instead, because the main beach is packed and the north wind there is gusty or offshore.

Hazards riders report 10

  • Rocks near the main beach - it can be unsuitable in swell
  • Big waves in stronger conditions
  • Rocks near the beach and at bay ends
  • Large shorebreak area; waves can exceed 3 m in strong S/SW winter/spring conditions
  • Waves do not break progressively.
  • Gusty southerly wind
  • Summer north wind may be offshore/gusty on the main beach.
  • Tourists, swimmers and umbrellas in July/August, especially August
  • Possible coastal current in sustained wind
  • No permanent supervision.
Rules & access
Checked in 2026: no municipal kite rule found. In summer, launch next to the harbor, because the main beach is packed and the wind there is offshore.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Launch from the small bay next to the port in summer: the main beach is packed and the north wind there is offshore.
  • Work out first whether the day is the S/SW winter-spring setup or the NW/NNW summer one; they put you on two different beaches.
  • Check where the swimmer zones are in July and August before you rig.
  • Stay off the main beach in big shorebreak unless you are happy with waves that do not break progressively and a rocky exit.
  • Time the last session for sunset, then eat at one of the beach tavernas.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Falassarna?

Winter and spring bring southerly (S/SW) wind, the spot's main documented pattern, though sources disagree since some describe a reliable June-to-September NW Meltemi instead.

Is Falassarna suitable for beginners?

No; shorebreak, rocks and gusty or offshore wind point to intermediate and advanced riders, with the small harbor bay as a more forgiving option when the main beach doesn't work.

What is the wind like?

Winter and spring southerly systems produce roughly 4-7 Beaufort with about 4-5 windy days a month, while summer's north wind over the mountains is reported as extremely gusty and offshore on the main beach.

What hazards should riders know about?

Rocks near the beach and at the bay ends, shorebreak with waves that can exceed 3 meters in strong winter/spring conditions, and heavy summer tourist crowds are the main hazards.
