Kitesurfing in Crete

16 spots · 5 destinations · 8 schools

Crete splits by coast: the north catches the Meltemi onshore at spots like Ammoudara and Rethymno, building chop and small waves that suit intermediates, while the south coast gets the same wind offshore and accelerated by the island's terrain, turning Ierapetra and Kalamaki into advanced-only sessions for riders who can hold upwind.

Kouremenos in the east fires most reliably from May through October, and Elafonisi's shallow lagoon in the southwest is the one genuine beginner spot.

Crete holds 16 kitesurf spots in our atlas, grouped into 5 destinations. Riding here is mostly waves, chop, lagoons and flat water. The season runs May to October.

5 of them suits beginners. 8 schools operate in the region. The busiest areas are Crete - Kouremenos (Sitia), Heraklion regional unit and Ierapetra & Istro East.
