Istro East is a small spot in Mirabello Bay, off the coast road between Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra, below Istron and Kalo Chorio. The beach is officially Pilos, locally Istron Bay after the hotel on the slope above it, and Istro East to kiters.
The N to NNW Meltemi bends into the bay as onshore wind, usually 12-22 knots and softer than it blows on the open coast. The water is semi-flat with moderate chop over a sandy bottom, the water clear and blue to turquoise, with rocks at each end of the beach and a current that on some days carries debris.
Crete is not among Greece's windiest corners and the bay takes off more, so Istro is opportunistic next to the classic Cyclades spots: check the forecast, ride if it comes in, go sightseeing if it does not. Bring a foil or a bigger kite for the marginal days.
Sunbathers, swimmers from June to August and boat traffic in Mirabello leave thin margins on a medium beach, and there is no school and no permanent supervision here.

Typical strength

12-22

Moderately reliable in summer once the Meltemi gets into Mirabello Bay, though the bay takes the edge off compared with the open coast. Crete is not among Greece's windiest areas, and Istro is a spot you take when it happens rather than one you book for.
June to September, with the onshore Meltemi arriving in the afternoon. Summer is the best window, and June to August is also when the beach fills with swimmers.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, derived from the 12-22 kt bay range rather than from local practice, and nobody publishes sizes for this beach. A 75-85 kg rider is on 9-10 m when the Meltemi is properly into the bay, 12 m on the softer afternoons the bay produces more often, and 7-8 m only on the rare day the northerly arrives unfiltered. A foil covers the marginal days, which are normal here.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

sea

Standing depth

progressive depth reported; no detailed shallow-water extent was found

Tides

Tide plays no practical part. The nearest published table, Agios Nikolaos 12 km west, moves about 0.2 m either side of mean low water, so roughly 40 cm at the extreme of a month and usually much less. Sessions are planned on the wind, not on the water level.

Temperature

Summer 24-26, sometimes given as 24.

Winter about 16-17 from Crete-wide sea temperatures; no Istro-specific winter measurement was found

Wetsuit

Lycra or shorts in summer, a wetsuit in spring and autumn, a long wetsuit in winter.

Currents

A moderate current is possible in the bay, and Pilos gets days when the current carries debris.

17–28°C water
Semi-flat with moderate chop inside a partly protected U-shaped bay. The water is clear, blue to turquoise, over a sandy bottom with rocks at the ends of the beach; messy small waves and rougher chop turn up on some days.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
Intermediate and up rather than beginner. The limits are boat traffic in the bay, the swimmers and sunbathers on the sand, the rocks, moderate chop and current, plus nobody on watch.

The scene

What riders come here for

A tourist beach and a village bay, not a kite centre. Plenty of sunbathers, with tavernas and mini-markets behind and parking off the road.

Every spot within 40 km is on the map at the top of this page, with its distance under it.

Rescue

No permanent supervision reported. Cover at the local windsurf area is not assured either, and has fallen short on days with too many windsurfers on the water.

Launch

Sand launch on Pilos beach, about 1 km east of Istron village, reached by a short road off the Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra coast road; the same road runs down to a small harbour. Kiters call the spot Istro East, the beach is officially Pilos and locally Istron Bay after the hotel on the slope above. In summer it is an organised beach with umbrellas, loungers and beach service from the hotel, so the width you can actually rig in is what is left between the sunbeds and the rocks at each end.

Rules & access
2026: no kite-specific rule for the bay was found on the municipal or port-authority side, so the national water-sports rules are what govern. No riding before sunrise or after sunset or in adverse weather; 200 m from swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, reefs and other obstacles; 1 nautical mile from ports, marinas and fish farms; no further than 1 nautical mile offshore; a clear 100 m radius to launch and 60 m upwind of bystanders; minimum age 16, with parental consent from 14. Pilos is an organised bathing beach with a blue flag and hotel-run sunbeds, so the swimming area comes first and there is a small harbour on the same access road — ask locally before rigging in July or August.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig only where you have clear beach downwind; the sunbathers get there before you do.
  • Go when the northerly is entering the bay cleanly, because the whole spot depends on how Mirabello lines up with it.
  • Watch for fishing and excursion boats once you are away from the beach.
  • If the sand is full, check Istro West or another Mirabello launch before you pump.
  • Pack a bigger kite or a foil; marginal days are normal here.
