Xerokambos is a wild bay in the southeast corner of Crete, out past Zakros and Ziros, with no school, no rental and no rescue at the beach. Advanced riders only, and not alone.
The wind is the whole argument here: wrapped NW/WNW Meltemi is reported side-onshore and up to 20-30 knots in peak summer, while older windsurf accounts hold that the Meltemi blows fully offshore at Xerokambos and that the usable setups are the W to SW thermal in summer and SW storms in winter.
That conflict is unresolved, so read the angle from the beach before you rig. June to September is when the Meltemi reaches this coast; it is gustier and less dependable than Kouremenos, and the value of the place is on days when the standard Meltemi spots are flat.
The water is an open bay with chop or waves, a sandy and rocky bottom, shallow areas, submerged rocks and a coastal current that gets strong in sustained Meltemi. Phone signal is reportedly limited and the road in from Zakros is long and winding. Come for the emptiness and the beaches, not for a session you can count on.

Typical strength

20-30 knots in peak summer per one source; 20+ knots from thermally strengthened W/SW flow per another

Variable and terrain-affected. The wrapped Meltemi can be strong, but it is gustier and less dependable than Kouremenos, and it is also reported to blow offshore here. The value of the spot is on days when the usual Meltemi spots are calm.
June-September is when the Meltemi reaches this coast. W/SW thermal flow can work in summer when the normal Meltemi spots are not working, and winter SW storms can turn Xerokambos into a wave spot.

Direction to shore

Unconfirmed. NW/WNW is reported arriving side-onshore, and the Meltemi is also reported fully offshore at Xerokambos. SW winter storms come in sideshore from the right.

Dominant direction

Reported inconsistently: NW/WNW Meltemi in some accounts, W to SW in others.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Summer about 24-27 for Crete summer sea-temperature references; no Xerokambos-specific value was found

Winter about 16-17 for Crete winter sea-temperature references; no Xerokambos-specific value was found

Wetsuit

Likely lycra/shorts in high summer and full wetsuit in winter based on Crete sea temperatures and Crete spot-guide wetsuit guidance; no Xerokambos-specific wetsuit advice was found.

Currents

significant coastal current is reported in sustained Meltemi; no measured current data was found.

An open bay with chop and waves built by the Meltemi, a sandy and rocky bottom, shallow areas and submerged rocks. Solitary sandy beaches, clear water, and wave potential in winter.

Isolated and self-reliant: advanced only. No rescue, variable wind, coastal current and rocks rule out beginners and make it poor for intermediates unless a competent local is guiding.

Rules & access
As of 2026, no formal kitesurf rule was found online; Xerokambos is presented as an advanced autonomous wild spot, with a warning not to sail alone.
Greece-wide kitesurf rules apply nationally: kitesurfing is prohibited at heavily frequented beaches, before sunrise/after sunset, within 200 m of swimmers/rocks/obstacles/anchored boats, within 1 nautical mile of ports/marinas/fish farms, within 200 m of the shoreline except past swimmer-limit buoys, and in wind above 6 Beaufort without lifeguard and powered-vessel rescue support.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Never ride alone here; there is no rescue and nobody watching the water.
  • Stand on the beach and read the wind angle before rigging, because it is unconfirmed whether the summer Meltemi arrives side-onshore or offshore.
  • Carry water, sun cover, a repair kit and a conservative quiver; there is no kite infrastructure at the spot.
  • Launch and land on the sandy section and stay off the rocky coast either side of it.
  • Allow about 55 minutes by car from Sitia, 38 km, and expect a long winding approach if you come via Zakros.
  • Go to Kouremenos or Palaikastro instead if you need a school, rental or a more predictable Meltemi.
