Ammoudara is the long sandy beach immediately west of Heraklion, in the Gulf of Heraklion on Crete's north coast, and one of the better-documented kite beaches on the island.
The wind is the summer Meltemi and its thermal, north to northwest, 15-25 knots June to September with July and August the best of it; one long-term model puts the year-round average at 7.5 knots, which tells you how quiet the rest of the year is.
Water is flat to choppy, with small waves once it has been blowing for a while, and the shallows near shore are sandy, so lessons work here.
It is a city beach, and that is the catch: swimmers under parasols, sunbeds, windsurfers, ships in and out of Heraklion port, and the airport next door, which means launching in the marked zone and keeping the kite low. The centre is 5 km away, the airport bus takes about 40 minutes, and there is parking.
Riders already on Crete or passing through Heraklion should use it; on its own it is not a reason to fly over, because Greece has windier places.

The north wind season runs May to September and is most reliable in July and August, when the Meltemi and the afternoon thermal stack up. Outside that the coast goes quiet, with the odd winter front. Guides that give Crete a September-to-June season are describing other coasts and other spots on the island, not this beach.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Tides

Not tide dependent.

Temperature

27°C summer · 17°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or a lycra in high summer; a 2 mm or shorty in the shoulder season, a 4/3 in winter.

Currents

Coastal current possible, and reportedly a strong current near the channel; which channel is unconfirmed.

17–28°C water
North-facing sandy beach on the Gulf of Heraklion, flat to choppy with small waves. Waves reportedly reach around 1.5 m on the right tide and wind, and sustained onshore wind builds chop with waves on top.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Shallow water and a big launch make it a beginner spot on paper; the onshore chop and an urban tourist beach full of hazards argue for intermediate. Supervised beginners are fine. Independent beginners should keep out of the summer swimming zones.

Rescue

No kite rescue and no club watching the water. The beach reportedly carries Blue Flag status, whose safety criteria require either lifeguards or public rescue equipment plus first aid through the bathing season, but no lifeguard post is confirmed on the stretch riders use, and cover on an organised Greek beach is aimed at swimmers close to shore rather than at a kiter drifting downwind.
Schools look after their own clients only. The emergency number is 112. With Heraklion port traffic to the east and a long open bay in front, ride with someone who can raise the alarm.

Launch

Wide sandy beach with room to launch between the windsurfers and the swimmers. Use the marked zones and keep away from the parasols and sunbeds and the busy bathing sections.

Rider tips

  • Bring a 7-12m quiver; the wind range here needs it.
  • No car needed: several bus routes run from Heraklion, and there is plenty of parking if you do drive.
  • Rig away from the parasols and the marked swimming zones, June through September especially.
  • The airport windsocks are a decent local wind gauge; look at them on the way in.
  • Watch for ships leaving Heraklion port and for current near the channel before you go far downwind.
  • Keep the kite low; the airport is next door.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite at Ammoudara?

The season runs June through September, with July and August rated the most reliable, driven by the summer Meltemi thermal.

Is Ammoudara suitable for beginners?

Shallow water and a large launch make it workable for supervised beginners, though the busy tourist beach and onshore chop mean independent beginners should avoid crowded summer swim zones.

What is the wind like?

Summer brings a Meltemi/thermal wind from the north to northwest, typically 15-25 knots between June and September, most reliable in the afternoon.

Are there kite schools nearby?

Surf In Crete, Elafonisi Kite and iKiTe operate in the area.

Are there any rules to follow?

Riders are expected to respect swimmers and marked bathing zones; no official municipal kitesurfing ordinance was found as of 2026.
