The spot

Elafonisi is the shallow lagoon north of the small Elafonisi islet, in far southwest Crete, and the water is the reason to come: waist deep, clear, nowhere more than about 1 m.

Wind and season

The summer wind is a side-shore NW thermal, Beaufort 4-5 and about 15-20 kt when it works, though longer-run averages sit far lower and the forecast deserves a look rather than an assumption. May to October is the practical season, June to September the safest bet, afternoons better than mornings.

Space

The catch is space. The riding box is roughly 70 by 120 m with take-off and landing on a strip about 50 m wide, the crossing to open water narrows to about 50 m between rocks, and afternoon glare hides both the rocks and the other riders. Kites stay in the right-hand half of the lagoon; the rest is swimming water on one of the busiest day-trip beaches in Crete.

Legal rules

This is a Natura 2000 shore and the 2026 high-protection rules tightened rather than loosened, so what is legal on the day is worth a phone call before you drive the 75 km from Chania.

Standing depth

The lagoon north of the islet is waist deep and nowhere more than about 1 m, so you can stand across most of the riding area. The islet sits about 200 m off the main beach and you can wade the whole way. Sandbars break the depth up, and the shallowest strips leave barely enough water under a board.

Tidal range is negligible - roughly 0.01-0.12 m on a typical day - and riding is not tide-dependent. Lagoon water levels still shift slightly with the cycle and with the wind pushing water over the bars.

The main swimming beach is run as a natural preserve by the Kissamos and Kantanos-Selino municipalities, with lifeguards, showers, changing rooms and canteens in season. On the kite side, cover is whatever the local schools have on the water: the station operates daily from 1 May to the end of October, and the kite club runs inflatables for its own trips.

No dedicated rescue service for independent riders is published anywhere. Nearest kite contact on the beach: +30 697 331 5928.

2026: Elafonisi islet with its coastal marine zone, and the shoreline from Chrysoskalitissa to Cape Krios, are on the national 'untrodden beaches' list of high-protection shores inside Natura 2000. The list was widened from 238 to 251 areas by a joint ministerial decision signed in April 2026, amending decision YPEN/GDPP/35330/646 of 2 April 2024.

What's prohibited and allowed

Inside these zones there is no concession of the shore for organised use - no sunbeds, umbrellas, canteens or beach bars - no permanent or temporary structures, no alteration of the natural ground, no mass commercial activity and no vehicle traffic or parking in sensitive areas. Free access, swimming, low-impact recreation without mass-use equipment, and scientific work stay allowed.

The decision does not name kitesurfing, and no kite-specific municipal or park zoning is published; on the ground riding is confined to the right-hand half of the lagoon toward open sea. Confirm the current zone locally before rigging.

From Chania it is 75 km and about an hour and a half by car, over the southwest mountain roads via Kissamos; day-trip buses run daily in season.From Palaiochora, boats leave the eastern harbour and usually reach Elafonisi around 11:00, heading back at 17:00 - a six-hour window, no more.Chania (CHQ) is the nearest airport; Heraklion is far to the east.

SUP, kayak, swim or snorkel in the lagoon, walk the spit to the Elafonisi islet and up to the lighthouse, take the E4 toward Kedrodasos and Krios, stop at Panagia Chrisoskalitissa on the road in, or run a boat trip out of Palaiochora.
