Skala Kallonis is a lagoon-flat spot inside the Gulf of Kalloni, in the middle of Lesvos. The gulf is closed off from the open sea, so however hard it blows you never get open-sea waves, just flat water and chop over a sandy bottom that shelves gently off the beach. That is what makes it a teaching bay.
The wind is the argument: good thermal and frontal wind is reported all year, and it is also plainly lighter than the west coast of the island, with northerly thermals in summer and winter southerlies that bring some chop. The one concrete figure anyone gives is 12-18 knots for the warm winds, with something stronger in late August.
Bring big kites. Rescue and school coverage are unconfirmed, and so is any official kite zone, and there is a mole, shells in the water and trees behind the beach to keep clear of.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Type

enclosed gulf / lagoon-style sea bay

Standing depth

Shallow near the sandy shore; the exact standable kiting zone is unconfirmed.

Tides

Tide independent.

Temperature

Summer 23-24 around Lesvos/Skala Kalloni August averages; sheltered shallows may feel warmer but no measured spot value is published

Winter 14-17 around Lesvos/Skala Kalloni winter averages

Wetsuit

Shorts in summer, shorty in spring/fall, normal wetsuit in winter; other reports describe warm winds/water but give no wetsuit schedule.

17–26°C water
Flat to small-wave water in a lagoon setting. The gulf is not open sea, so strong wind does not create large open-sea waves, and the bottom is sandy.

Your level

It gets ridden at every level. The gulf is sheltered from big waves and the bottom is sand, which is why the teaching happens here.

Rules & access
Checked in 2026: no Skala Kallonis ordinance was found. The Greek national kitesurf rules prohibit riding at crowded beaches, before sunrise or after sunset, within 200 m of swimmers or obstacles, beyond 1 nautical mile from shore, in adverse weather, and in offshore wind without motor-boat assistance; launching requires a clear 100 m radius.
In 2014 local riders were working with the Port Authority to delimit kite areas under the Port Code, for safety and to keep clear of swimmers, but no final mapped zone was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Pack the light-wind kite unless the forecast shows late-August strength or a winter southerly.
  • Leave a wide margin around the trees, the mole and anything with overhead wires; a kiter hit an electrical pole here in 2015.
  • Keep 200 m off the swimmers in June, July and August, as the national rules require.
  • Check the sand before you walk it barefoot: there are shells on the beach and in the water.
  • If it is too light, compare Sigri and Limena before writing off Lesvos for the day.
