On the clock

14:00

Thermal, so there is usually nothing before lunch. It builds after midday and is normally established around 14:00, then holds into the evening.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Kaminia is the long sandy beach on Mounda Bay in southern Kefalonia, between Skala and Ratzakli, and it comes with two incompatible descriptions. One is shallow, flat, tide-independent water with a thermal that fills in after about 14:00, and a beach anyone could learn on.
The other is Maestro wind at 12-22 knots over open Ionian water, with swell, shore break, rocks along the coast, currents and nobody to come and get you. The sand itself is not in dispute: long, shallow at the edge, and part of a Caretta caretta nesting area with marked nests through the May-August season.
That is what decides your day here more than the wind does, because the nests and any seasonal closure move the usable beach around. Come between May and November, look at the sea before you unpack, and treat the level rating as unsettled rather than beginner.

Character

thermal

fills in: Thermal, so there is usually nothing before lunch. It builds after midday and is normally established around 14:00, then holds into the evening.

Typical strength

12-22 kt is the band that gets quoted for the summer thermal and Maestro. Nothing is measured at the beach itself.

Two readings of the same wind: an afternoon thermal, and a summer Maestro that turns powerful where the coast opens west into the Ionian. The exposure is unconfirmed, because the descriptions of which way the beach faces do not line up.
May-November is the wide window, with Maestro riding placed more narrowly at May-September. Every month of the year also appears as rideable, unconfirmed and with nothing behind it.

The quiver, in words

8-12 m is the range that gets quoted. For a 75-85 kg rider that works out at 12 m at the bottom of the 12-22 kt band, 10 m through the middle, 8-9 m once it is over 20 with swell running, and a 14 m if you want to catch the thermal as it fills. Indicative: no operator here publishes a quiver chart.

Direction to shore

The beach runs WNW to ESE on the south coast between Ratzakli and Skala and faces about SSW. S, SSW and SW come in straight onshore; SSE is side-onshore off the left-hand end; WSW and W are side-onshore off the right. NNW and N blow offshore here, and NE is well offshore. The reading that puts a NW Maestro side-onshore does not fit the shoreline as it is mapped. Derived from the mapped beach outline, not from a measurement on the sand.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Sand and a gentle slope at the shore, shallow enough to walk a good way out on a calm day, with rock and rougher bottom in places along the coast. No measured wading distance has been published, and once swell is running the shallows become a shore break rather than somewhere to stand.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions do not depend on tide at Kaminia Beach.

Temperature

25-27°C summer · 14-16°C winter

Wetsuit

Summer usually boardshorts/rash vest; spring/fall shorty or light full suit; winter full wetsuit. Based on Skala/Kefalonia sea-temperature data.

Currents

Coastal currents are reported; no official current source found.

Long sandy beach on the Mounda Bay side of southern Kefalonia. Shallow and family-friendly as a swimming beach, but 0.5-2 m Ionian waves and swell turn up with the wind.

Hazards riders report 14

  • Caretta loggerhead turtle nesting area
  • possible seasonal beach closures
  • shore break in stronger wind
  • rocks in places
  • isolated coast with limited rescue
  • Caretta caretta loggerhead turtle nesting beach; marked nests and seasonal protection measures.
  • Other beach users, especially July and August.
  • Possible powerful shore break in stronger wind.
  • Swell and waves in strong wind.
  • Rocks along the coast and sandy/rocky bottom in places.
  • Coastal currents reported.
  • No on-site rescue and no kite center.
  • The beach faces about SSW, so wind from N through NE blows straight off the land and out to sea.
  • A NNW Maestro is offshore here despite being listed elsewhere as side-onshore; check the wind against the beach line, not against the listing.
Rules & access
  • 2026: Kaminia and Mounda are a loggerhead turtle nesting area, with marked and protected nests through the May-August nesting season. Keep off marked nests, do not dig, camp or disturb the beach at night.
  • 2026: the general Greece kitesurfing rules require the launch area to be clear of people and objects within 100 m, and prohibit kitesurfing within 200 m of the shoreline. No Kaminia-specific kite ordinance is confirmed.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the section you plan to use before rigging; marked turtle nests and protected areas shift through the May-August nesting season.
  • Rig on the wide open sand away from swimmers, especially in July and August.
  • Ride with someone else once the sea starts building. There is no rescue here.
  • Look at the water on arrival and work out which Kaminia you got: flat shallow thermal, or shore break and swell.
  • Rent a car. Getting to the beach with gear from Skala or the airport any other way is not practical.
  • Line the forecast up against the beach itself: it runs WNW-ESE and faces about SSW, so anything out of the north quadrant is taking you away from the sand.
