On the clock

11:00

around 11:00 to lunchtime, then afternoon until sunset

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Sigri sits at the north end of Sigri Bay on the western tip of Lesvos, a windsurf village that works just as well for kites. The summer Meltemi comes from the north to northwest, usually filling in late morning or around lunch and running through the afternoon at 15-25 knots.
In front of the centre the wind is cross-offshore, which is why the water there is flat; a short way out it is stronger and flatter still, and that is the freestyle water. Keep going, out of the bay toward the Nissiopi channel, and you find swell and waves.
Sigri Surf and Extrados both teach here and both put a boat on the water, and you want that: cross-offshore means drift, and it goes gusty close to shore in some directions. Watch for summer swimmers off the village beach, for windsurfers on the same patch and for rocks where the bottom turns rocky.

consistent summer Meltemi, but gusty close to shore in some wind directions
Main kite season is May to October; June to September is the most consistent Meltemi period, with July and August often described as optimal. The centre on the beach runs April to mid-October, which is the outer window in which you will find rental, instruction and a boat on the water here.

The quiver, in words

7-12 m, with 9 m described as a summer all-round size

Direction to shore

Cross-offshore in front of the centre at the north end of Sigri Bay, which is exactly what keeps that water flat. Two kilometres away at Limena the same Meltemi arrives side-onshore, from the right as you look out. Faneromeni bay takes it side-on with bigger chop. The three descriptions are not in conflict; they are three different beaches around the same headland.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Limena bay, 2 km along the coast, is the shallow flat sandy one and is where beginner courses run, so that is the bay to pick if you want to be able to put a foot down. In front of the centre the flat freestyle water starts roughly 30-40 m out and no standing depth has been published for it.

Lessons run from first day through advanced, and the flat water out front suits professional freestylers. The cross-offshore wind is why safety cover matters more here than at an onshore beach.

Rescue

Two rescue boats are kept at the centre for safety cover, and lessons are run over radio under the eye of a safety boat. That matters here, because the wind in front of the centre is cross-offshore.
Nissiopi across the bay caps how far you can drift inside the bay itself; past the channel you are in open Aegean water and on your own.

Launch

Sandy beach at the north end of Sigri Bay, in front of the windsurf and kite centre. The launch area there is marked out by buoys and runs about 50 m wide. The air right in front of the centre is gusty, so launching is the awkward part of the day rather than the riding.Nissiopi island sits across the bay and screens the open Aegean, which means a rider who goes down inside the bay is not swept away. Two kilometres along the coast, Limena bay gives a 600 m sandy beach with room to spread out and a clean entry into shallow flat water.Faneromeni bay, about a kilometre of beach, is the third option and has space to launch and land.

Rules & access
2026: no spot-specific municipal ordinance was found. The Greece-wide kitesurf rules prohibit riding within 200 m of swimmers and closer than 200 m to shore except beyond the swim-zone buoys or marked waterways, prohibit riding at crowded beaches, and require rescue cover when the wind is offshore.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride the cross-offshore days with a centre boat on the water, not on your own.
  • Ignore Mytilene wind statistics; Mytilene sits outside Sigri's wind zone entirely.
  • Rig around 11:00 and expect the wind to hold until sunset.
  • Take 9 m as the summer all-round size, with 7-12 m covering the rest of the season.
  • Pack a shorty or a neoprene top for the shoulder months and a full wetsuit if you come in winter.
  • If you want water you can stand up in, ask for Limena bay rather than the beach in front of the centre.
  • The launch in front of the centre is a buoyed lane about 50 m wide and the air in it is gusty. Get the kite up, get out, sort yourself out on the water.

Sigri Surf and Extrados offer lessons for beginners through advanced riders, with rescue-boat cover for the cross-offshore wind.

What is the wind like at Sigri?

The Meltemi blows from the north to northwest, cross-offshore in front of the centre, typically 15-25 knots and building from late morning into the afternoon.

Are there kite schools at Sigri?

Sigri Surf and Extrados Kite Activity both operate at the spot with rescue boats.

What hazards should riders know about at Sigri?
