A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. What it holds here is the month's average wind, month by month; it does not count how many days carry a three-hour window at 12 kt.

Good to know before you go2
- Wind readings for Mytilene town do not reflect conditions at Sigri — the island's main weather station sits on a different coast, so island-wide forecasts can mislead; check spot-specific conditions.
- The Lavrion–Sigri ferry runs only once a week each direction (Friday out, Sunday night back) — outside that window, driving across the island is the only way in or out.
The spots
Limena
Limena sits on the western tip of Lesvos, a 20-minute walk from Sigri village, inside the island's strongest summer wind zone.

Limena: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Limena
The Meltemi comes out of the north sector (N, NW, NNW) from May to October and usually fills toward midday rather than at breakfast; south wind turns up outside summer. The water is shallow and standable along a 600 m sandy beach, clear over sand, side-onshore from the right, with small to medium waves. That is enough for first steps. Downwinders open up along the coast once you can ride. Rocks are exposed at the northern end, a stronger current near the channel is reported but unconfirmed, and depending on where you set up along the bay the wind can come cross-offshore. Sigri Surf and Extrados run instruction in the wider Sigri area, so there are boats on the water, but whether they cover an independent rider at Limena is not documented. Come for the space and the emptiness; skip it if you want a serviced beach with a kiosk behind it.
Getting on the water
Large sandy, uncrowded beach about a 20-minute walk from Sigri village, 600 m long with lots of space and easy water entry.
If it goes wrong
The Sigri centre keeps two rescue boats for safety cover and teaches under a safety boat in radio contact with the instructor. It also rents its full kite range to qualified riders going out on their own. Nothing states that the boat is sent to Limena, which is a 20-minute walk from the village and out of sight of the centre's own launch, so ask in the morning rather than assuming. Extrados runs its own safety boat for its courses, on +33 6 89 16 80 66. Absent a yes, treat Limena as a self-rescue beach.
Rules and access
What applies is the national regime under the general port regulations on the protection of swimmers, 72/1968 and 12/1986: no kiting on organised or crowded beaches, none before sunrise or after sunset, 200 m clear of swimmers, a maximum of one nautical mile from shore, one nautical mile from ports, marinas and fish farms unless the local committee cuts it to 500 m, a launch and landing area of at least 100 by 100 m marked with yellow buoys with a 100 m radius clear of people and objects, no riding in offshore wind without a motorboat in support, and above 6 Beaufort a licensed lifeguard and a powered vessel must be present. Minimum age is 16, or 14 with parental consent and supervision, and riders are expected to hold the relevant certification.
Sigri
Sigri sits at the north end of Sigri Bay on the western tip of Lesvos, a windsurf village that works just as well for kites.

Sigri: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Sigri
The summer Meltemi comes from the north to northwest, usually filling in late morning or around lunch and running through the afternoon at 15-25 knots. In front of the centre the wind is cross-offshore, which is why the water there is flat; a short way out it is stronger and flatter still, and that is the freestyle water. Keep going, out of the bay toward the Nissiopi channel, and you find swell and waves. Sigri Surf and Extrados both teach here and both put a boat on the water, and you want that: cross-offshore means drift, and it goes gusty close to shore in some directions. Watch for summer swimmers off the village beach, for windsurfers on the same patch and for rocks where the bottom turns rocky.
Getting on the water
Sandy beach at the north end of Sigri Bay, in front of the windsurf and kite centre. The launch area there is marked out by buoys and runs about 50 m wide. The air right in front of the centre is gusty, so launching is the awkward part of the day rather than the riding. Nissiopi island sits across the bay and screens the open Aegean, which means a rider who goes down inside the bay is not swept away. Two kilometres along the coast, Limena bay gives a 600 m sandy beach with room to spread out and a clean entry into shallow flat water. Faneromeni bay, about a kilometre of beach, is the third option and has space to launch and land.
If it goes wrong
Two rescue boats are kept at the centre for safety cover, and lessons are run over radio under the eye of a safety boat. That matters here, because the wind in front of the centre is cross-offshore. Nissiopi across the bay caps how far you can drift inside the bay itself; past the channel you are in open Aegean water and on your own.
Rules and access
2026: no spot-specific municipal ordinance was found. The Greece-wide kitesurf rules prohibit riding within 200 m of swimmers and closer than 200 m to shore except beyond the swim-zone buoys or marked waterways, prohibit riding at crowded beaches, and require rescue cover when the wind is offshore.
