Limena sits on the western tip of Lesvos, a 20-minute walk from Sigri village, inside the island's strongest summer wind zone. The Meltemi comes out of the north sector (N, NW, NNW) from May to October and usually fills toward midday rather than at breakfast; south wind turns up outside summer.
The water is shallow and standable along a 600 m sandy beach, clear over sand, side-onshore from the right, with small to medium waves. That is enough for first steps. Downwinders open up along the coast once you can ride.
Rocks are exposed at the northern end, a stronger current near the channel is reported but unconfirmed, and depending on where you set up along the bay the wind can come cross-offshore.
Sigri Surf and Extrados run instruction in the wider Sigri area, so there are boats on the water, but whether they cover an independent rider at Limena is not documented. Come for the space and the emptiness; skip it if you want a serviced beach with a kiosk behind it.

Character

thermal

fills in: Mornings are usually calm. The thermal builds toward lunchtime and holds until sunset, starting around 11-18 kt and topping out from midday onward.

Typical strength

15-25 knots on most May-October Sigri days; reported range is 11-18 knots early, rising to up to 25 knots around noon.

consistent summer Meltemi in the Sigri wind zone; Mytilini wind statistics are not representative for Sigri
May through October is the season, with very consistent north-wind Meltemi in summer and south wind in spring, winter and autumn. At Sigri the core season reportedly runs April to mid-October.

Also on record

23.3 kt for the Sigri/Lemina area; the counting method behind that figure is unconfirmed.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, since no local table exists, but the wind band here is well described. At 75-85 kg the 9 m is the season kite for the 15-25 kt Meltemi that runs most days from May to October.Bring a 12 m for the late-morning phase, when the thermal is still in the 11-18 kt range, and a 7 m for the afternoons that push past 25 kt. Spring and autumn south-wind days are 12 m or bigger.

Direction to shore

Side-onshore from the right at Limena Bay; exact bearing by launch sector is unconfirmed.

Dominant direction

N, NW, NNW; south winds also occur outside summer.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

The Sigri centre keeps two rescue boats for safety cover and teaches under a safety boat in radio contact with the instructor. It also rents its full kite range to qualified riders going out on their own.
Nothing states that the boat is sent to Limena, which is a 20-minute walk from the village and out of sight of the centre's own launch, so ask in the morning rather than assuming. Extrados runs its own safety boat for its courses, on +33 6 89 16 80 66. Absent a yes, treat Limena as a self-rescue beach.

Launch

Rules & access
Checked in 2026: nothing kite-specific is posted for Limena and no municipal rule was found. What applies is the national regime under the general port regulations on the protection of swimmers, 72/1968 and 12/1986: no kiting on organised or crowded beaches, none before sunrise or after sunset, 200 m clear of swimmers, a maximum of one nautical mile from shore, one nautical mile from ports, marinas and fish farms unless the local committee cuts it to 500 m, a launch and landing area of at least 100 by 100 m marked with yellow buoys with a 100 m radius clear of people and objects, no riding in offshore wind without a motorboat in support, and above 6 Beaufort a licensed lifeguard and a powered vessel must be present.
Minimum age is 16, or 14 with parental consent and supervision, and riders are expected to hold the relevant certification.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Read the forecast for Sigri or Limena itself. Mytilini station numbers do not describe this coast.
  • Aim for late morning onward: the thermal builds toward noon and holds to sunset.
  • Ask at the Sigri centre whether the day's rescue boat covers Limena or only the main centre launch.
  • Carry water and shade for the 20-minute walk in; Limena is far less serviced than the centre beach.
  • Stay off the northern end of the bay where the rocks are exposed.
