A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. What it holds here is the month's average wind, month by month; it does not count how many days carry a three-hour window at 12 kt.

Good to know before you go2
- Istro East can get crowded with windsurfers in summer, which locals flag as a real safety consideration for kiters sharing the small bay.
- Istron/Kalo Chorio has no real supermarket or nightlife of its own - stock up and plan evenings in Agios Nikolaos or Ierapetra.
The spots
Ierapetra
Ierapetra sits at Crete's narrowest point, and the isthmus is what makes the spot.

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 11.9 kt in July, the strongest month it models for this spot.
Ierapetra: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Ierapetra
Meltemi comes over the island from N/NNE, accelerates through the gap and reaches the south coast offshore, typically 20-30 knots with gusts above 35. Near shore the water goes flat; farther out the Libyan Sea puts swell under you, and whether the whole stretch is really flat or just chop with small waves is unconfirmed. The flat strip is the trap: offshore wind plus a reported offshore current turns a broken line or a lost board into a drift toward open water. Intermediates and up only, and only with dependable upwind. You launch off a working town seafront with parasols, swimmers, restaurants behind you, a mole and wave breakers, so from June to August the beach is crowded before the wind arrives. Ierapetra Watersports runs supervised lessons and rentals on the same seafront, but whether it would come out for an independent kiter is unconfirmed. Core season is June to September, sometimes given as May to October, and summer water sits at 24-27 C, which is lycra or shorts.
Getting on the water
Launch from the Ierapetra town beaches along the seafront: a medium sandy beach with the promenade and buildings behind it.
If it goes wrong
Ierapetra Watersports is a supervised watersports centre with lessons and rentals. No public rescue cover for independent kiters.
Rules and access
As of 2026 no formal rule is published for the seafront, so check locally. Never sail alone, and carry a waterproof phone or a VHF because the wind is offshore.
Istro East
Istro East is a small spot in Mirabello Bay, off the coast road between Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra, below Istron and Kalo Chorio.

Istro East: the long version, the launch and the rules
More on Istro East
The beach is officially Pilos, locally Istron Bay after the hotel on the slope above it, and Istro East to kiters. The N to NNW Meltemi bends into the bay as onshore wind, usually 12-22 knots and softer than it blows on the open coast. The water is semi-flat with moderate chop over a sandy bottom, the water clear and blue to turquoise, with rocks at each end of the beach and a current that on some days carries debris. Crete is not among Greece's windiest corners and the bay takes off more, so Istro is opportunistic next to the classic Cyclades spots: check the forecast, ride if it comes in, go sightseeing if it does not. Bring a foil or a bigger kite for the marginal days. Sunbathers, swimmers from June to August and boat traffic in Mirabello leave thin margins on a medium beach, and there is no school and no permanent supervision here.
Getting on the water
Sand launch on Pilos beach, about 1 km east of Istron village, reached by a short road off the Agios Nikolaos to Ierapetra coast road; the same road runs down to a small harbour. Kiters call the spot Istro East, the beach is officially Pilos and locally Istron Bay after the hotel on the slope above. In summer it is an organised beach with umbrellas, loungers and beach service from the hotel, so the width you can actually rig in is what is left between the sunbeds and the rocks at each end.
If it goes wrong
No permanent supervision reported. Cover at the local windsurf area is not assured either, and has fallen short on days with too many windsurfers on the water.
Rules and access
2026: no kite-specific rule for the bay was found on the municipal or port-authority side, so the national water-sports rules are what govern. No riding before sunrise or after sunset or in adverse weather; 200 m from swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, reefs and other obstacles; 1 nautical mile from ports, marinas and fish farms; no further than 1 nautical mile offshore; a clear 100 m radius to launch and 60 m upwind of bystanders; minimum age 16, with parental consent from 14. Pilos is an organised bathing beach with a blue flag and hotel-run sunbeds, so the swimming area comes first and there is a small harbour on the same access road — ask locally before rigging in July or August.

What riders say
5 recurring claims
On the Ierapetra side the summer wind squeezes through the isthmus and blows off the land out into open sea — the calm water in front of town is the warning, not the reward
consensus×3 riders
Riders who base themselves at Ierapetra end up driving over to the north side of the isthmus to actually get on the water
consensus×3 riders
The chop here is punishing rather than playful, but it is warm enough all summer to ride in nothing but a lycra
majority×2 riders
Forecasts for this isthmus over-read: riders arrive on a promise of sixteen or seventeen knots and find people on fourteen-metre kites struggling to hold height
majority×2 riders
Istro divides riders sharply: one account calls it the one bay near Agios Nikolaos worth using because it lines up exactly with the wind and catches the least breath, another tried it and was flatly unimpressed, and the spot record says limited space, rocks and not recommended

FAQ
What is the wind like at Ierapetra?
The summer Meltemi crosses Crete from the north/northeast and reaches the south coast as offshore wind, accelerated by the narrow isthmus, which can flatten the water close to shore.
What is Istro East like?
It is a small sandy U-shaped bay in Mirabello Bay near Istron, where the N/NNW Meltemi funnels in to give semi-flat to choppy water.
Is Istro East crowded?
The bay sees many summer beach users, and there are rocks at the ends to watch for.
