On the clock

12:00 · 13:00

Around 12:00-13:00, then blowing until evening; afternoons are usually breezier.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Achivadolimni is one of the longest sandy beaches on Milos, on the Gulf of Adamas, and with Papikinou it is where the island's board sports happen. The beach faces north, so the Meltemi arrives straight onshore: reliable summer wind, chop and 0.5-1.5 m waves rather than a flat lagoon.
It fills in around 12:00-13:00 and holds until evening, 15-22 knots in summer with peaks over 25 knots in July-August, and 8-12 m covers most of it. Water is shallow near shore over sand and 23-25 C in summer, and the beach is half organized: taverna, beach bar, umbrellas, sunbeds.
Whether a kite school is actually working the sand in a given season is not documented the way it is at the bigger Greek kite beaches, and there is no named rescue provider and no lifeguard cover.
Onshore wind with chop, shorebreak in strong Meltemi and swimmers in July and August mean a beginner belongs here with an instructor, not alone. Milos airport is right next to the beach, so aircraft come over on the approach. Come in June or September if you want the Meltemi without the beach crowd.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Hazards riders report 6

  • Milos airport is immediately behind the beach: aircraft noise and an approach path overhead.
  • Onshore Meltemi rather than side-shore wind.
  • Shorebreak in strong Meltemi.
  • Swimmers and beach users in summer.
  • Rocks at beach extremities.
  • Airport is close to the beach, so aircraft noise and approach traffic are nearby.
Rules & access
  • 2026: Greek national kitesurf rules apply here. No riding before sunrise or after sunset, 200 m clear of swimmers, of anchored boats, buoys, markers and rocky ground, and no riding when the wind is over 6 Beaufort.
  • 2026: riding is kept at least 200 m from the shoreline except when passing beyond the swimmer buoys, and no further out than 1 nautical mile; ports, marinas and fish farms carry a 1 nautical mile exclusion.
  • 2026: the launch area must be an unobstructed strip at least 100 m long and 100 m wide, marked with yellow floating buoys and signed in Greek and English, with a 100 m radius clear of people and objects.
  • 2026: helmet, buoyancy or impact vest, harness and hook, quick release with safety leash, a knife able to cut lines, and kite and board leashes are all mandatory; a wetsuit is required from 15 October to 15 May.
  • 2026: the national text requires kite areas to sit well clear of airports and of the airspace used for take-off and landing, which matters here because the Milos runway is directly behind the beach. No Milos-specific municipal or port-police restriction for Achivadolimni was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check the day's north-wind strength before you commit: the Meltemi lands onshore here, not side-shore.
  • In July and August rig and launch well away from the organized section and the swimmers.
  • Ask in Adamas which school or safety cover is actually running that season before you pay for lessons.
  • Base in Adamas, 5 km away, for the port, the restaurants and the boat trips out to Sarakiniko and Kleftiko.
  • Take the Adamas-Airport-Achivadolimni-Provatas bus if you travel light; with gear, rent a car or a scooter.
