Vets Beach is a free Monroe County park on Little Duck Key, at the west end of Seven Mile Bridge, and the flats in front of it are about as flat as the Keys get.

The whole appeal of Vets Beach is that you can stand up almost anywhere on the flats and walk your gear back to the sand, which is why nervous riders and people testing new kit pick it over the deeper spots.

It stays quiet. One or two other kites on the water is a normal session here, while the state-park lots further up the highway fill on windy weekends.

Bahia Honda next door is not the same thing at all: the park is a fee gate that fills by early afternoon, and the kite launch beside it is a rocky horseshoe with urchins rather than easy flats.

The direction that actually gets ridden here is the north one, and it blows off the land — that is the real risk of the place, softened only by the bridge chopping up the flow.
