Cape Hatteras is the historic home of East Coast windsurfing and kiteboarding: a 40-mile barrier island strung along a single highway with a handful of soundside launch spots rather than one town center. It's a self-catering, drive-between-villages trip organized around kite schools (especially REAL Watersports in Waves) rather than nightlife - great for intermediate-to-advanced riders who want flat sound water and are happy renting a house and a car. It is not for people wanting a compact walkable base, real bar/club scene, or guaranteed warm water outside summer. Hurricane season overlaps the best wind window, and the island's single access road can flood shut, so plan with slack.

Editor's brief
Three facts orient everything else here. One: the wind season and the business season do not overlap. Reanalysis for 2015-2024 puts 84-91% of days above a 15 kt daily max from December through April, peaking in February at 91% and a 22.9 kt mean - but REAL runs camps March-November and Kitty Hawk Kites March-November, so the windiest quarter of the year is also the one with no lessons, no rental counter and a 13-15 C sound. August, the month families book, is the weakest month of the year at 57%. Two: there is one road on and off, and one 115 kV cable feeding the island; in July 2017 a contractor cut all three conductors at once and the state evacuated roughly 50,000 visitors while it took a week to fix. Three: the island charges you almost nothing - no National Seashore entrance fee at all, $50 for a 10-day ORV permit only if you drive on sand, free Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry - and then takes it back in lodging and lessons. The logistics truth is that Norfolk is the airport and Raleigh is a trap. ORF to Avon is 213 km and about 3 h 15 min free-flow; RDU to Avon is 398 km and a full five hours, not the four hours everyone repeats. There is no bus, no on-island rental counter, and no shuttle - one rental car per group, and if you plan to drive on sand, buy the ORV permit on Recreation.gov before you arrive. On bases: Waves is the shortest drive to emergency care (43 km / ~40 min to the Nags Head ED) and has the best-specified stay in the record - Waves Village Watersports Resort, 1,658 sq ft soundfront 3BR condos with a free on-site launch, soundfront pool and private hot tub, booked through First Flight Rentals on 866-595-1893. Avon is the services village - Food Lion at 41934 NC Hwy 12 open 07:00-22:00, the island's only doctor's office at 40894 NC Hwy 12 - and sits 3.7 km / 6 minutes from Kite Point. Kite Club Hatteras at 40159 North End Rd in Avon is the school Reddit names first, publishes a $1,100 three-day course and houses its students; it was missing from this record entirely. Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe is the honest budget answer at $47-$112 a night for a tent site, with no weather refunds in writing. What nobody tells you: the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is shut for climbing all through 2026, so the standard rest-day plan is dead (Bodie Island, $10, is the substitute). Drones are banned on every metre of NPS land and water here. Shorebird closures run March-September and turtle closures May-September, and NPS says openly they expand and contract with bird behaviour, so last year's access proves nothing. Kite Point's lot is small and fills fast, with power lines along NC-12 directly behind the launch. And from Hatteras Village the nearest emergency room is 97 km and 100 minutes away - a very different number from the 40 minutes you get in Waves. The decisions a traveller must make are therefore blunt. Do you want wind or do you want infrastructure - December-April buys you 22-23 kt means and a 5/4 with hood, March-November buys you coaching, rentals and 26 C water in a weaker season. Do you want the flagship spot or a parking space - Avon for Kite Point at six minutes and accepted crowding, Waves or Rodanthe for a private launch and a longer drive to the marquee sandbar. And if you book anywhere between September and November, get the evacuation-refund clause in writing before you pay, because the island's single road and single power line are not a theoretical risk.
What nobody tells you first
- Power lines run along stretches of NC-12 near the sound - a known local hazard; stay well clear when launching or riding near them.
- Mosquitoes at dusk in the marshy soundside spots can be brutal in summer; bring serious repellent.
- NC-12 is a single road that does flood or wash out in storms, potentially stranding you on the island or blocking your route in - watch storm forecasts even outside the kite forecast.
- Hatteras Island has no commercial airport - factor a 2.5+ hour drive from the nearest major airport into your trip.
- Very few hotels; almost everyone stays in a rented house, so book early for peak fall weeks.
- This is not a nightlife destination - if you want bars and clubs beyond a low-key restaurant/bar scene, you'll be disappointed.
- The island runs on one 115 kV line from Oregon Inlet and one road. In July 2017 a contractor cut all three transmission cables and ~50,000 visitors were evacuated mid-summer while repairs took a week. Camp Hatteras states outright that it gives no refunds for weather - check your own booking's evacuation clause before you pay for a September week.
- The windiest months (Dec-Apr, 84-91% of days with daily-max over 15 kt) are the months the schools are shut - REAL runs camps March-November, Kitty Hawk Kites March-November. If you need lessons or rental gear, you cannot have the best wind.
