Kite Beach (Kanaha), Maui

• The 2026 Aloha Classic runs 19-30 October 2026 at Ho'okipa Beach Park as the closing event of the Unified PWA/WWT Wave World Tour - a twelve-day waiting period for wave windsurfing. Lodging across the North Shore tightens for the back half of October, not into November.

Before you book

• Kanaha's water is state-zoned, not just county-managed. HAR Title 13 Chapter 256 Subchapter 9 covers the North Shore Maui Ocean Recreation Management Area, defined as all ocean waters and navigable streams from the eastern boundary of Maliko Bay to Waihee Point, extending 3,000 feet seaward. Within it, section 13-256-130 defines three swimming-only zones at Kanaha with surveyed azimuth-and-distance boundaries off Exhibit 'AAA' dated 20 August 1988. The stated purpose of the whole chapter is 'to reduce conflicts among ocean water users, especially in areas of high activity.'
• The immediately adjacent water east of the kite corner is also regulated: 13-256-129 designates the Papa'ula Point Restricted Zone - beginning at the low water mark on an extension of the east boundary of Kahului Airport - for fishing and diving, barring vessels and sailboards, with windsurfing access west of the zone permitted only after 11:00 a.m. That is the same 11:00 hinge as Kanaha, one bay over.
• Anyone teaching you commercially at Kanaha needs a DLNR permit: 13-256-3 requires all operators of commercial vessels, water craft or water sports equipment to hold a departmental commercial operator permit, and 13-256-4 requires commercial water sports equipment to be registered with the department. The chapter also mandates a Recreation Advisory Committee of at least three members per management area, each with three or more years' experience in their specialty, to review commercial permit applications - which is the local body that would actually know how the kite-versus-sailboard wording is being applied today.
• Routed drive times from the kite corner, computed door to door: OGG terminal 1.7 km / 4-5 min; Maui Seaside Hotel 3.8 km / 7 min; Maui Memorial Medical Center 6.5 km / 11 min; Paia Inn 13.5 km / 16-17 min. The whole functional trip fits inside a 15-kilometre triangle.

Action Sports Maui runs from 1900 South Kihei Road in Kihei, +1 808-283-7913, teaching kiteboarding from age 12 and meeting riders at Kite Beach - note the office is a 40-minute drive from where the lesson happens.
• Maui Seaside Hotel, 100 W Kaahumanu Ave, Kahului: air conditioning and free wifi both confirmed on the hotel's own amenity list, a pool (three Poolside room categories exist), Tante's Island Cuisine on site, and rooms built around a mini-fridge, coffeemaker and flat-screen rather than a kitchen. Poolside categories cannot take airbeds. Accessible rooms with handrails and some roll-in showers are offered. • The morning is structurally dead for kiters and the local economy reflects it: the state rule holds launches until 11:00, and Kanaha Kai does not open its doors until 10:00. Riders who want a dawn activity should plan land time - Haleakala sunrise, a Hana leg, a grocery run - rather than hoping for an early session.

• Kanaha is one of the true birthplaces of modern kiteboarding - Laird Hamilton and Manu Bertin were experimenting with early kite rigs here in the mid-1990s, building on Maui's existing windsurfing culture.

• What is Hawaiian Electric's actual SAIDI and SAIFI for Maui island in the most recent reporting year, and how often does a Kahului or Paia rental lose power for long enough to matter to a working traveller?
• How frequent are car break-ins specifically at the Kanaha Beach Park lot in 2025-2026, as opposed to general Hawaii beach-parking folklore? Is there a pattern by time of day, and is the kite-corner gravel lot better or worse than the main park lot?
• What is a realistic rideshare fare and wait time from OGG arrivals to the Kanaha kite corner in peak season, and is it even reliably available for a 1.7 km trip?
