Pleasure Bay & Dog Beach

2 spots · 3 schools

This is a big-city kite scene, not a kite trip: Pleasure Bay sits inside Boston's South Boston waterfront and Dog Beach is a 30-40 minute drive up the North Shore in Nahant. You base yourself in Boston for the city and drive out to whichever spot the wind direction favors that day.
It suits a local or a rider already in Boston for work who wants a session between meetings; it does not suit anyone hoping for a self-contained beach-town kite holiday, because neither spot has any tourist infrastructure of its own.

The spot cards

Good to know before you go2

  • Nahant Dog Beach only works for a narrow window around low tide in westerly wind — it is not a spot you can show up to on a whim.
  • Pleasure Bay's launch is small and the lagoon is enclosed; it gets crowded fast when the wind is on.

The spots

  1. Pleasure Bay

    bay

Pleasure Bay is the enclosed lagoon beside Castle Island in South Boston, and in southerly wind it goes glassy flat.

    intermediateadvancedsmall rigging room

The model here carries the month's average wind rather than a count of windy days: it reaches 13.5 kt in February, the strongest month it models for this spot.

Pleasure Bay: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Pleasure Bay

The launch is the tight sand and pebble corner at the southwest of the bay, right where the beach runs out and the rock wall begins, and it is gusty there: the wind shadow makes a dropped kite hard to relaunch when the surface breeze is light. You rig close to rocks, close to walkers, and close to the power lines behind the road. Not a beginner beach. Stay upwind, self-land, self-rescue, then take an assisted launch even if you are advanced. Summer is largely closed to you: no kitesurfing while lifeguards are present, generally 10 AM-6 PM, and Pleasure Bay is off limits during July-August daytime. Easterly wind puts the bay under the Logan Airport approach, where kite flying is prohibited under FAA regulations, though no ordinance text specific to Pleasure Bay was found. Come March-May or September-November, ask before you rig, and if none of the locals are on the water treat that as the answer.

    Getting on the water

A tight sand and pebble corner at the southwest end of Pleasure Bay, where the beach runs out and the rock wall begins. Get an assisted launch, advanced riders included.

    If it goes wrong

No kite rescue of any kind is on record here. Assume self-rescue, assume a kite dropped in the wind shadow will not come back up, and do not go out unable to stay upwind. Lifeguards cover the swimming area in summer, which is exactly the period you are not allowed to ride. Emergencies go to 911.

    Rules and access

2026: no kitesurfing when lifeguards are present in summer, generally 10 AM-6 PM, and Pleasure Bay is off limits during July-August daytime; body dragging is not allowed. Castle Island and Pleasure Bay are open sunrise to sunset, and swimming outside the designated swimming areas is prohibited (2022 state safety guidance).

  2. Dog Beach

    bay

Dog Beach, also called Doggie Beach or Black Rock, is a west-facing tidal launch between Long Beach and Short Beach on the Nahant side of Boston's North Shore.

Dog Beach: the long version, the launch and the rules

    More on Dog Beach

Shallow water, mostly flat with chop and the odd small wave, and it is often cloudy rather than clean. The reason to bother is that it is the one North Shore option that works in westerly wind. Most people do not, because it works for a few hours around low tide, in moderate wind, and not otherwise. SW through NW are the directions to use: SW is the stablest, NW and NNW go gusty, N and NE come in blocked off the hills, and E and SE are offshore. There is no parking at the beach, so you park at Nahant Beach or Long Beach for a fee and walk about 1/8 mile with your gear. No lifeguards, no facilities, stones and shells and exposed clam beds underfoot, dogs on the sand year-round. March through May and September through November are the seasons, and September is the one to pick because the water is still warm and the summer crowd has gone.

    Getting on the water

Tidal sand/pebble launch opposite Nahant Beach between Long Beach and Short Beach; there is no direct parking, so park at Nahant Beach and walk about 1/8 mile or drop gear and park.

    If it goes wrong

No lifeguards at Doggie Beach and no organised kite rescue. During a paid lesson the instructor stays close by and will come to you if you fire the quick release; on your own, plan on self-rescue and a long walk back across the flats at low water. Emergencies go to 911.

    Rules and access

2026: no kite-specific rule is posted, and the advice is to ask the Fiesta House and Revere locals before using the beach. Doggie Beach is open to dogs year-round and has no lifeguards; public parking is at Nahant Beach and Long Beach for a fee.

Getting there & around

  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) — inside the city, about 15-20 minutes from South Boston
Car neededyes
TransfersPleasure Bay/Castle Island is reachable by MBTA Red Line to Andrew or Broadway plus a walk, or bus routes 7/9/10/11 to the City Point terminal. Dog Beach in Nahant is not realistically reachable without a car; the MBTA 439 bus connects Nahant to Lynn but does not go near the beach itself.
Road quirksNahant is reached via Route 129 through Lynn, a single causeway-style approach; expect summer weekend traffic on the same road into Nahant's own beaches.

Seasons beyond windSummer (June-September) is peak visiting season for Boston generally and for Nahant's beaches; the shoulder months bring cold water requiring wetsuit/hood/gloves for kiting even when the city itself is pleasant.

What riders say

5 recurring claims

  1. Dog Beach is a west-wind answer for Boston riders, not a beach-resort spot; it has no facilities, no lifeguards, awkward parking, dogs, debris, and a narrow tide window.

    consensus×5 riders

  2. Pleasure Bay is loved for flat, enclosed city water, but riders describe it as an intermediate spot with gusts, rocks, tight launching, and airport-related wind weirdness.

    majority×4 riders

  3. The Boston scene is more local-session than travel destination: people talk about wind direction, tides, group chats, and schools, not lodging or kite-camp life.

    majority×4 riders

  4. Beginners are repeatedly steered away from Pleasure Bay unless they can self-rescue, self-land, stay upwind, and get assisted launching.

    majority×3 riders

  5. September gets singled out around Nahant because the water is still tolerable, beaches are emptier, and wind is strong enough without peak-summer crowding.

Scene & life

History & trivia

Scene & life

  • Fort Independence on Castle Island has held some form of fortification since the 1630s; the current granite pentagon fort dates to 1834-1851.
  • South Boston's Dorchester Heights, overlooking the harbor, is where George Washington positioned cannons in March 1776 to force the British evacuation of Boston — still marked by the city's Evacuation Day holiday.

Itinerary idea

Base in South Boston, treat both spots as wind-dependent day trips rather than a destination in themselves, and plan the rest of the trip as a normal Boston city visit.

FAQ

Is Pleasure Bay suitable for beginners?

It offers flat water inside an enclosed lagoon by Castle Island, though access is sensitive and it works best with southerly-sector wind.

Is Dog Beach suitable for beginners?

No, it is rated an expert spot on Boston's North Shore, with shallow water that mixes flat, choppy and small-wave sections and a tidal launch.

What we could not settle. Ride here? These are the gaps worth filling.

  • Is 'Pleasure Bay & Dog Beach' the name riders actually use for this area?
  • No confirmed lodging, price examples, or SIM/internet specifics for this destination — none of the sources covered them.
  • Is there an organized kite meetup for Boston-area riders, beyond the one school?
