  1. The Fier-side lagoon at Darezeze is where people actually learn. Reviews from students point at shallow, flat, stand-up-depth water and a small family-run school teaching in twos and threes rather than pushing volume, and repeatedly call it one of the easier places in Europe to get started.

  2. At Pish Poro the wind is not the hard part - the shorebreak is. The sandy bottom rises and falls along a shoreline that twists, so waves and currents right at the beach stay powerful even when the wind is moderate, arriving one after another and shifting direction, which makes working a few dozen metres upwind off the beach genuinely difficult.

  3. Riding at Pish Poro exists because one operator negotiated it. He agreed with local authorities to use a marked strip of beach only, and kiters are tolerated there as his guests or students - the standing rule being not to ride near the sunbeds and umbrellas.

  4. You will very likely be alone. One party had nobody on the beach but the operator himself, out on a 17m; another rider pair travelling the whole coast saw exactly two kitesurfers in the country - one in the distance and one packing up.

  5. Vlore bay itself is a different animal from the open beaches: flat at low water, choppy once the wind fills in, with rock along some sections, and the return to shore is what catches out less experienced riders when the wind strengthens or shifts.

  1. About two hundred metres out it goes calm and close to perfect. The catch is that any small mistake or lull pushes you straight back into the messy shorebreak you just fought through.

  2. Going south past Vlore the wind eases and the coast turns rocky, leaving only a few usable beaches that fill with swimmers in July and August - which is why riders who come here are told to travel outside high season.

  3. There is an organised local scene here, not only visiting foreigners: a kite-and-windsurf race has run in the bay from Hidrovor out past Sazan island and finishing at the new beach on Vlore's seafront, with Albanian and foreign competitors.
