On the clock

11:00 · 13:00

Unconfirmed. The school runs lessons after 11:00 or after 13:00 depending on the day, which is the only clue to when the wind fills in.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Plazhi i Darëzezës is an open Adriatic beach 20-23 km south-west of Fier, next to the village of Darëzezë e Re: fine sand, a shallow entry, pine forest and dunes behind it, and nothing built on the sand itself.
On a rideable day the water is chop and small wind waves, not a flat lagoon; if you need flat water to learn on, this is not it. Nobody has published usable wind numbers.
The only public averages are 4-5 kt with thermals left out, while the Albania-wide pattern is afternoon wind of 15-25 kt somewhere in April-October, May-September at the core; which of those months actually work at Darëzezë is unconfirmed.
There is one local school, Artur Sulejmani's, teaching after 11:00 or after 13:00 depending on the day, and calling it before you drive down from Fier is the whole plan. Space is no problem once you are past the umbrella rows; July-August weekends fill the serviced stretch with Fier families.
Weever fish sting bathers in the shallows most summers (2021, 2023 and August 2026 all had cases), so wear something on your feet. The access road was potholed in 2020 and again in 2025 and is being rebuilt in 2025-2026.

Typical strength

The published monthly averages are 4-5 kt with 33 windy days a year, and they leave thermals out, so they say little about a summer afternoon. The inland Fier statistics are no help either.

Under-documented. People kite and windsurf here, but every public wind statistic is either a model, measured inland at Fier, or leaves the thermal out.
The Albania-wide pattern is afternoon wind from April-October, May-September at the core; nobody has published which of those months actually work at Darëzezë. The spot statistics show no summer peak, but they leave thermals out, so that proves little.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Standing depth

Shallow off the sand; how far out you can still stand is unconfirmed.

Temperature

Summer 24.3°C summer average; August average 25.5°C, with a 10-year August range of 22.5-28°C.

Winter 15.6°C winter average; January average 15.2°C and February average 14.5°C.

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a rash vest are usually enough in July-August; a full wetsuit is likely needed in winter and shoulder months because water averages 14.5-19°C from February-May.

14–28°C water
Open Adriatic sand beach, not a lagoon. On a normal day it is chop and small wind waves; Albanian news makes more of the waves than a rider would, and a forecast for 26 August 2026 showed 0.37-0.68 m, which is about what to expect.
Fine sand, a shallow entry and a wide shore with pine forest and dunes behind it.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Listed for every level and the school teaches first-timers here, but this is open sea with wind waves and a shorebreak that storms reshape before the season. Learn with the school; ride alone only once you can handle chop and a self-rescue.

Hazards riders report 4

  • Open Adriatic: wind waves on windy days, and winter storms reshape the sand before the season (a beach operator said as much in 2020), so the bottom you knew last year may have moved.
  • Weever fish ('peshku harabel') in the shallows: stings sent bathers to the medical post in 2021, 2023 and on 26 August 2026. Crab and insect bites get reported too.
  • The access road: potholed in 2020 and still bad in 2025. A municipal project with EBRD and Albanian Development Fund money is rebuilding the Darëzezë-Seman corridor in 2025-2026, so expect roadworks.
  • In July and August the serviced stretch fills with bathers and umbrella rows and private beach sections; rig well away from them.

Rider tips

  • Call the Darëzezë school before you drive down from Fier; no public forecast for this beach is good enough to plan a session blind.
  • Rig on the empty sand past the umbrella rows; on July-August weekends the serviced stretch is full of families from Fier.
  • Wear booties or shuffle your feet in the shallows: weever-fish stings at Darëzezë put people in the medical post in 2021, 2023 and again on 26 August 2026.
  • Expect chop and small wind waves, not lagoon flat water; if you are learning, do it with the school, not alone.
  • Check the state of the Darëzezë-Seman road after rain and early in the season; it was potholed in 2020 and 2025 and is being rebuilt in 2025-2026.
  • Lessons run after 11:00 or after 13:00, which is the closest thing to a wind onset time anyone has published; do not plan on a morning session.

Getting there

Airport

Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza (TIA)

Route

From Tirana airport it is about 106 km to Fier, around 1 h 28 min by car; by bus via Durrës count on 2 h 40-2 h 55. From Fier it is another 20-23 km of local road to the beach, and that last leg is by car.

Transfer

About 120-180 by car from TIA: the published airport-Fier drive plus the last leg to the beach, not a measured transfer. Bus plus a local ride takes longer.

Cost level

Low to medium. In 2020 a private room ran about 10,000-15,000 old lek a night and an umbrella-and-sunbed set about 500 lek (2020 prices); small stays around Fier and Darëzezë still show up for 2026, but nobody has published current prices.

Staying

A few guesthouses and rentals at Darëzezë e Re, plus the school's own rooms; the hotel supply is in Fier. As of 2020 there was still no hotel or resort on the beach, only restaurants and rooms to let, and whether that has changed is unconfirmed.

FAQ

Is Plazhi i Darëzezës suitable for beginners?

A local Darëzezë-based school teaches all levels, but the open Adriatic beach has reported wind waves and possible shorebreak, so independent beginners should use local instruction rather than self-teach.

What is the wind like?

Public wind statistics for the beach are weak, showing only 4-5 knot monthly averages and 33 windy days a year, explicitly excluding thermal wind. Summer directions run around west to west-northwest.

Are there kite schools or rental here?

Kitesurfing in Albania (Artur Sulejmani) and Kitesurf Lessons Albania both operate directly at Darëzezë Beach, offering courses and water-sport activity for all levels.

What hazards should I know about?

Albanian reports from 2021, 2023 and 2026 describe repeated weever-fish stings in the shallow sand, and the access road has been reported as poor or potholed in some years.
