Vilë-Bashtovë is a wide, quiet sand beach on Albania's central Adriatic coast, in Rrogozhinë municipality near the village of the same name, about 69.5 km and an hour from Tirana Airport, with free parking on the sand and no spot fee. Shallow water with a gentle entry; chop and small waves once the wind is in.
The wind is W and NW, onshore to side-onshore, May through September, the afternoon thermal doing most of the work at 11-19 knots with plenty of days under 10. Nobody teaches here.
No school, no rescue boat, no kite corridor and no wind station have been found for this beach, and the nearest working school, at Rinia in Durrës, lists Spille as its on-forecast option rather than this one; so it is a beach for riders who carry their own light-wind gear and can self-rescue, and a poor choice for a first season.
The Shkumbin River mouth is on the wider Bashtovë coast to the south; what it does to current and water clarity at the kite end is unmeasured.
A 2023 drowning here was tied by police to a rented beach parcel with no full-time lifeguard, no signage and no buoys, which is a fair guide to how much to expect from the beach services. No wind means Bashtova Castle, Spille or the Divjakë-Karavasta lagoon.

fills in: Afternoon, on the Albania-wide thermal pattern; no Vilë-Bashtovë time is published.

Typical strength

Light, under 10 knots, to pleasant, 11-19 knots. Albania as a whole gets afternoon thermals May-September; nothing has been measured at Vilë-Bashtovë itself.

Forecast-dependent and thinly documented: light to moderate onshore to side-onshore wind is what the listing supports, and there is no anemometer, school log or long-term statistic to check it against.
May through September, with the thermal helping in the warm months. The Albania-wide experience is light, short afternoon windows and low reliability; nothing specific to Vilë-Bashtovë has been logged.

The quiver, in words

For 75-85 kg: a 12 m handles the ordinary 14-18 knot thermal afternoon, and a 15 m or bigger, or a foil kite, earns its place because so many days sit under 12 knots. Anything below 9 m is dead weight outside a front.Indicative only: the range comes from the same central Adriatic coast and from schools working 40 km north, whose quiver runs 5-17 m, and nothing has been logged at this beach.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sandy open-sea beach

Standing depth

Shallow with a gentle sand entry, and on this coast you can generally wade well out from the waterline before it takes your feet. No depth or distance has been measured at Vile-Bashtove (indicative, no local measurement).

Tides

Small Adriatic range; the Durrës tables for 27 August 2026 showed about 0.06-0.51 m through the day. There is no gauge at Vilë-Bashtovë.

Temperature

24.5°C summer · 15.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Boardshorts or a sun top in summer; shorty or thin full suit in spring and autumn; full wetsuit in winter, going by the nearby Spille figures of about 15.4 C in winter and 14.3 C in February.

Currents

Nothing measured. The Shkumbin River mouth is on the wider Bashtovë coast, so what happens near the southern end after rain is a local-check item.

Shallow, choppy, small waves, on a wide sand beach with a quiet family crowd. An open Adriatic beach session, not a lagoon.

Rescue

No lifeguard, rescue boat or kite cover is confirmed. Where a beach station operates, the 2024 beach-station decision still in force for 2026 requires observation points with one certified lifeguard per 80 m of shoreline plus rescue floats, buoys and lines; a national inspection in July 2026 found towers unmanned and the equipment kept indoors.
After the 2023 drowning here, police recorded the rented beach parcel as having no full-time lifeguard, no warning signs and no buoyed swim limits. Emergency number is 112, and the ambulance comes from Rrogozhine or Kavaje. Ride with someone and be able to self-rescue.

Launch

Long sand beach with a gentle entry, free parking on the spot and no fee. Where kites actually launch, how swimmers are separated and what the summer beach-station layout looks like are all unconfirmed.

Hazards riders report 7

  • river mouth currents possible near the Shkumbin outflow (unconfirmed)
  • No kite rescue, local school or formal kite corridor on record at this exact beach.
  • Chop and small waves on most rideable days.
  • Possible Shkumbin River outflow/current influence near the southern part of the wider coast; unconfirmed at the usual kite launch.
  • Swimmers, umbrellas and managed beach-station areas during summer.
  • A 2023 drowning at Vilë-Bashtovë was tied by police to missing safety measures on a rented beach parcel: no full-time lifeguard, no signs, no buoys.
  • Light wind can make self-rescue and returning upwind difficult.
Rules & access
  • 2026: no kite rule, permit or launch corridor is on record for Vile-Bashtove. The National Coastal Agency's 2026 summer notices list Vile-Bashtove among beaches where beach-station operators apply under VKM No. 649 of 16.10.2024, applications running 23 February to 15 March 2026, and the 2024 Rrogozhine municipal register has the municipality running Spille and Vile-Bashtove with private operators over 7.6 km of beach.
  • 2026: the same decision obliges a beach station to keep observation points with one certified lifeguard for every 80 m of coastline and the rescue equipment to go with them; enforcement across the coast has been poor.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Check a Durrës or Spille forecast and then look at the water when you arrive; there is no wind station at Vilë-Bashtovë and nobody logs sessions here.
  • Rig well away from the umbrellas and the beach-station areas, especially in July and August; there is no marked kite zone to hide behind.
  • Bring the light-wind kite; the listed range is under 10 knots to 11-19 knots and the thermal windows are short.
  • Stay away from the Shkumbin river mouth at the southern end unless you have checked the current and the water yourself.
  • Assume nobody is coming to get you: the 2023 drowning here happened on a beach parcel with no full-time lifeguard, and kite rescue has never been confirmed.
  • Park on the sand for free (there is no spot fee), and check the Vilë-Bashtovë-Spille road before taking beach tracks; it was being worked on in 2024.

FAQ

When is the best time to kitesurf at Vilë-Bashtovë?

May through September is the listed best window, on west and northwest onshore to side-onshore wind that is generally light, in the below-10 to 11-19 knot range.

Is Vilë-Bashtovë suitable for beginners?

The long sandy beach has gentle water entry, but no local school, rescue service or kite corridor has been verified for this exact beach, so beginner use should be conservative and supervised rather than independent.

Are there kite schools nearby?

No spot-based kite school is confirmed at Vilë-Bashtovë. Kitesurf Albania at Sektor Rinia/Durrës is the nearest active school and lists nearby Spille as an on-forecast option, but not Vilë-Bashtovë itself as a regular teaching spot.

What hazards should I know about?

No dedicated kite rescue is verified, and a 2023 drowning incident was linked by police reporting to missing beach-safety measures at one rented beach parcel, so treat lifeguard cover as unconfirmed.
