On the clock

13:00

The thermal comes up in the afternoon, which is also when the kite window opens at 13:00; mornings on this shore are mostly calm. Doussard sits at the end of the lake best exposed to that thermal, which is why the site exists at all.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Bout du Lac is the kite launch at the south end of Lake Annecy, a strip of shore between Doussard port and the pebble point where the Bout du Lac nature reserve begins. The reserve is closed to you, on foot and on the water, and the reed beds with it.
Wind is mountain-lake wind: a north tendency with the afternoon thermal on top, 10-20 knots on the good days, and a bise that runs 10-14 knots with gusts to 25, none of it as regular as a coast.
Kiting is allowed from 1 September to 30 June, 13:00 to sunset, and not at all in July and August when the beach belongs to the swimmers; the site carries the FFVL label and is listed as intermediate level. That timing suits the thermal anyway, since mornings are mostly calm. A buoyancy vest is compulsory on the lake.
This is a spot for foil and freeride riders, not a place to learn: the shoreline is tight, the port and its ponton are just to the west, and paragliders use the same field to land, so you share the rigging area with people coming out of the sky.
Park at the Plage de Doussard, cross the port and the little wooden bridge, and rig on the stabilised lakeside zone.

Typical strength

The afternoon thermal runs about 10-20 knots on the lake; bise days average 10-14 knots with gusts to 25. Neither figure has been measured at Doussard itself, and the bise blows rarely and not steadily enough to plan a trip around.

Mountain-lake wind. Good when the thermal or the bise lines up, gusty and patchier than any coast the rest of the time.
Kites are allowed 1 September to 30 June and not at all in July and August, when the beach goes to the swimmers. The afternoon thermal is the dependable part of the wind here; the bise is the one people wait for and rarely get in useful strength.

Thermal or synoptic

thermal and synoptic

The quiver, in words

Indicative, taken from the 10-20 knot afternoon thermal rather than from any measurement at the launch: a 75-85 kg rider wants 12-14 m for the light end of it and 9-10 m once the thermal is properly in.On a bise day the average sits at 10-14 knots but the gusts reach 25, so take the smaller size and expect to be underpowered between gusts. No local kite-size guidance has been published for Doussard.

Direction to shore

Depends where you stand on the shore and which way the lake axis runs at that point; think north tendency plus thermal, not a clean side-on angle.

The model reads 8% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season and the wind strength this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Rescue

Lessons are run in open water behind a safety boat, and boat drops are sold to get riders out to the wind. On your own there is no kite rescue on the lake that anyone has confirmed, which is part of why the buoyancy aid is compulsory. Emergencies on the water go to 112.

Rules & access
2026: open to kites from 01/09 to 30/06, 13:00 to sunset, and closed from 01/07 to 31/08. The Bout du Lac nature reserve is off limits, on foot and on the water, and navigation must stay at least 50 m clear of the reed beds. A buoyancy aid or life jacket is compulsory for kitesurf on Lake Annecy. Walking up to the pebble point with the kite already raised before launching is tolerated; entering the reserve is not. Lake-wide, motorised watercraft, towed devices and hydro-propelled lift craft are banned, and it is not locally clear that kitefoil escapes that wording. Compliance is checked on the water, mostly in summer, by the state water and nature inspection service.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Kite window is 1 September to 30 June, 13:00 to sunset; do not bother in July and August, the spot is closed to kites.
  • Read the notice board at the launch before rigging: the prefecture updates the lake's RPP and the rules change.
  • Park at the Plage de Doussard, walk through the port and over the small wooden bridge to the stabilised lakeside zone; do not cut through the reserve or the reeds.
  • Wear a buoyancy vest: it is mandatory for kitesurf on Lake Annecy.
  • Plan on the afternoon thermal over the north tendency; mornings are mostly calm here.
  • Look up before you launch: the paragliding schools land on the same field you rig on.
