On the clock
13:00 · 16:00
Mornings are offshore. The thermal component comes in around 13:00, and the wind can drop or swing offshore again around 16:00, which leaves a short usable window in the middle of the afternoon.
The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

The quiver, in words
10-14 m and larger is the useful range: 10-12 m for mid-season onshore gusty sessions, 14 m or more on very light trade days. A 75 kg twin-tip rider gets put on a 14 m for Bali dry-season wind.
Direction to shore
side-offshore to side-shore on the west coast; can become too offshore in strong easterlies
Dominant direction
E to SE in the dry season, with some W to NW directions in the wet season and on fronts.

modelled
A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.
Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water
Type
waves
Standing depth
Not a standing-depth learning spot; the riding area is open ocean over reef, rocks, beach break and surf channels.
Tides
Tide matters for hazards, not for depth. As the water drops, rocks and reef come clear and low water can drag a rider over them. Batu Bolong itself breaks on all tides; the channels and currents move with the swell. The wide beach at Seseh is rideable at any tide, one reason it is the easier of the three launches.
Temperature
28°C summer · 26°C winter
Wetsuit
Boardshorts or rash vest; water is warm year-round, peaking around 28-30 C in January and coolest around 25-28 C in mid-August.
Currents
Strong rip and channel current is the warning that comes up again and again. The Hotel Tugu/Canggu launch has strong current, and the Batu Bolong channel gets strong once the surf reaches head-high.

Rescue
Launch
Three usable launches on this stretch, and they are not equal. Pantai Berawa is a wide beach at a river mouth with few rocks or coral, and the wind there is side-offshore with gusts close to the breaks. The Hotel Tugu beach is narrow, full of rocks and submerged lava, with dangerous rip currents.Pantai Seseh, a little further up the coast, is the wide one: room to rig, fewer hazards on the sand and steadier side-shore wind. Pererenan is off limits, surfers only, and Echo Beach is best left alone for the same reason.

Rider tips
- Learn somewhere else in Bali: Sanur or Nusa Dua, not these surf beaches.
- Ask the kiters or surfers on the beach which channel is safe before you launch; channels, reef exposure and surfer traffic all move with tide and swell.
- Stay off Pererenan, which is a surfer spot where kiters get into trouble.
- Watch the tide going out: rocks come clear and low water can drag you over exposed reef.
- Do not bank on the 13:00 thermal if the wind is already very offshore or set to fade late afternoon.
- Carry enough kite for light gusty power and enough skill to self-rescue in surf if it shuts down.
- Berawa's river-mouth beach and Seseh give more room and fewer rocks than the Hotel Tugu strip; Seseh also holds a straighter side-shore wind.
- Stay off Pererenan, a surfer spot where kiters get into trouble.
Getting there
Airport
I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS)
Route
Drive or take a taxi or ride-hailing car from the airport toward Seminyak and north-west to Canggu, then the local access roads down to Batu Bolong, Echo Beach or the Hotel Tugu/Old Man's area. Expect paid local parking and heavy Canggu traffic.
Transfer
30-60 minutes from DPS in good-to-normal traffic, but Canggu traffic can add substantial time.
Cost level
medium-high
Staying
Canggu has dense accommodation: guesthouses, surf hostels, boutique hotels and private villas, at almost any budget.
No-wind days
surfing at Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Echo Beach or nearby breaks · cafes and restaurants in Canggu · sunset beach bars · yoga and fitness studios · Tanah Lot day trip · scooter trips to nearby southwest-coast beaches

FAQ
Is Canggu suitable for beginners?
No, this is treated as an expert-only spot; beginners should learn at Sanur or Nusa Dua instead.
When is the best time to kite?
June through September is the core dry-season window, though the thermal wind can stay light on many days.
What are the hazards?
Strong rip currents, exposed reef and rocks, and crowded surf lineups at Batu Bolong, Old Man's and Echo Beach.
Is there kite rescue on site?
No dedicated kite rescue or beginner teaching setup was verified at Canggu.
Where should you launch?
The Hotel Tugu/Old Man's/Batu Bolong area is the main zone; Pererenan is discouraged because it is a surfer spot.
