Depends on the monsoon. The island's long axis runs roughly north-east to south-west, so southwest-monsoon flow out of the west and south-west arrives cross-onshore on the north-west-facing side. Northeast-monsoon flow runs almost straight along that same beach and only turns onshore on the south-east side as it backs into the east.

- Book a whale-shark snorkel excursion around your sessions; it is the island's signature activity and the reason almost everyone else is there.
- Come between May and October. The atoll counts 22-24 days a month at 12 knots or more from May to October, 24 in January, and a floor of 10 in March.
- Watch the tide on the reef flat: spring highs reach about 1.2 m and the lowest lows sit near 0.1 m, and on a reef flat that half-metre is the difference between riding and walking.
- Bring big kites. At 75-85 kg a 12 m is the workhorse through the southwest monsoon, a 9-10 m covers the squally days, and a 15-17 m or a foil covers everything else.
- Stay inside a self-rescue of the beach: no school, rental or rescue cover is confirmed on the island, and the walk back runs the length of a 3 km beach.
- Give the excursion boats room; they cross the area on the way out to the whale-shark grounds.
