Ereaga is Getxo's town beach, over 800 m of fine sand between the Algorta old port and the Arriluze breakwater, at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary. The water is flat to choppy with occasional small waves, and it takes a strong sea before anything is surfable.
Kite guidance points at W, WNW and NW, while the beach is reportedly sheltered from northwest wind; that contradiction is unresolved and may only concern swell. The wind is thinnest in the months people visit: monthly averages of 5 knots in July and August against 10 in December, with the days over 12 knots stacking up in autumn and winter.
The obstacles are urban: the mole and its concrete, harbour structures, sand that comes and goes with the tide, and everyone else on the beach from June to August. Water runs 13-18 C, so a suit always. Posted signage in 2025 bans kitesurfing during summer.
No Getxo municipal text with exact dates was found, so ask locally before you rig.

Typical strength

Thin, and thinnest when people visit. Monthly averages run from about 5 kt in July and August to 9-10 kt in December and January, and roughly 143 days a year reach Force 4 or more, stacked into autumn and winter. A real session is a W to NW gradient day of 12-20 kt; below that the shelter behind the headland and the harbour takes what little there is.

Urban bay wind. W to NW is the sector, but the shelter and the buildings and harbour structures make it selective.
Days over 12 knots are most numerous in autumn and winter and thinnest in June-August. The April through September best-months figure belongs to the broader Santander kite region, not to Ereaga.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, derived from the 12 kt-plus gradient days rather than from local riders. A 75-85 kg rider wants 12-14 m for a marginal 12-15 kt W or NW day and 9-10 m when a winter front pushes it past 20 kt.Factor in a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit, which the 13-18 C water makes compulsory and which costs you a little bottom-end power.

Direction to shore

W to NW are the working kite sectors; Ereaga is also reportedly sheltered from northwest wind, which may cut both wave exposure and wind quality.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The launch is tidal and the usable space moves with the tide, while the riding itself is reportedly tide independent.

Temperature

Wetsuit

Water runs 13-18 C and a suit is always needed: a shorty or a normal suit in summer, a normal suit the rest of the year.

13–23°C water
Sheltered urban sand at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary. Flat to choppy for kiting, with occasional small waves; it takes a strong sea to make it surfable.

Your level

Intermediate, with something in it for advanced riders, and not a beginner beach. The summer ban and the crowd pressure settle that, flat water or not.

Rescue

Lifeguards work the beach from 11:00 to 20:00 in summer only, which is the season the wind is weakest and kiting is signposted off. Through the windy months there is nobody on the sand. No kite-specific rescue or safety boat is documented, and the sailing school in the Arriluze pavilion runs sailing, not kite.
General emergency number is 112. Downwind of the beach is breakwater and harbour concrete, so the self-rescue plan matters more here than on an open beach.

Launch

Sandy town beach between the Algorta old port and the Arriluze breakwater. The rigging area moves with the tide and with how much of the beach is in use in summer.

Rules & access
2025: posted signage states 'No kitesurfing during summer'. No Getxo municipal text setting the exact dates has surfaced as of 2026, and kite is absent from the water sports officially listed for the beach, which run to windsurf, jet ski, kayak, sailing, surf and bodyboard. Lifeguard cover in the bathing season is 11:00 to 20:00. Confirm on the beach before you rig.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Do not assume summer access; check the current Getxo beach rule before rigging.
  • Watch the tide, because the sand you rig on moves even when the riding does not care.
  • Expect a structured urban launch between the old port and the breakwater, not open beach.
  • Come in autumn or winter for wind; July and August average 5 knots.
