When it fills in

Nothing local is measured. The working west to north-west arrives with Atlantic systems and can blow at any hour; in settled summer weather a north-westerly sea breeze reportedly builds through the afternoon, which is the same window the beach is closed to kites from 1 June to 30 September.

Gorliz-Plentzia is a sheltered bay north of Bilbao, a sandy one-kilometre beach with flat-to-choppy water. W, WNW and NW is the sector that keeps coming up; NE-N gets in cross-onshore and less regularly, and NW-W swell can wrap into the bay and give you something to ride. Less exposed than beaches such as Sopelana, which is the reason to come.
Not a beginner launch, though: a street runs directly behind the sand, there is concrete, there are walkers, and onshore or cross-onshore angles leave very little room for a mistake. Water averages 20.5 C in summer, 21.9 C in August and 13.2 C in winter, so a suit all year.
The live problem is the season: as of 1 June 2026, kitesurfing is prohibited on the beach until 30 September, and the municipal ordinance text behind that could not be read.

Typical strength

No measured local average exists. A figure of 23.6 kt circulates for this beach with no method behind it and is unconfirmed; the nearest long-run station, Algorta, averages 4 kt with 7 kt gusts over 2012-2026, which is a sheltered estuary reading and equally unrepresentative of the bay. Treat any single number for Gorliz as unconfirmed and ride off a forecast.

Sheltered bay wind, condition-dependent. NW-W is the sector that keeps coming up; NE gets in but is less comfortable and more irregular.
Best months show as Dec-Feb in one dataset, are missing from another, and open all year turns up as a third answer. Summer is rule- and crowd-sensitive.

The quiver, in words

No local size table is published. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider in this bay: 13-14 m below 13 kt, 11-12 m around 15 kt, 9 m at 20 kt, 7 m once a winter westerly is over 25 kt.Nothing here is measured and the bay is gusty when the wind comes in onshore, so bring the range rather than one kite.

Direction to shore

NW-W is generally side-on to side-shore; NE-N comes in cross-onshore and is reportedly less regular.

Dominant direction

W, WNW, NW; NE-N also reported

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sheltered bay / ocean

Standing depth

Foot-depth water at both high and low tide, though how much of it there is remains unconfirmed.

Tides

Rideable at any tide, so access is tide-independent, but what you ride is not: flatter and cleaner water around high tide, choppier and shallower at low.

Temperature

Summer 20.5 average summer; August average 21.9

Winter 13.2 average winter

Wetsuit

A suit year-round: a lighter summer one may be enough in July-September, a full or thicker one in winter.

Currents

The bay is sheltered, but currents get stronger around the transition areas and the tide passages.

14–23°C water
Flat-to-choppy sandy-bay water with NW-W swell and beach breaks. When swell gets into the bay it wraps, and the water turns more interesting.

Your level

Intermediate and advanced, and explicitly not beginners, because a street runs directly behind the beach. Intermediate-only appears as a rating too.

Rescue

Lifeguard cover runs 1 June to 30 September 2026, every day 11:00-20:00, with six lifeguards plus one auxiliary acting as hondartzaina, run jointly by the Bizkaia provincial council and the Red Cross. That is bathing cover, not kite rescue, and it covers exactly the months kitesurfing is reportedly banned. Outside those dates there is nobody on the beach.
The beach carries a public-address system and a webcam showing the bay, San Valentin, Astondo, the promenade and the car park.

Launch

Sandy bay beach with parking and services behind it. Keep the launch clear of swimmers, walkers, the road, the promenade and the concrete.

Space

Rules & access
2026: kitesurfing is reportedly not allowed on the beach from 1 June to 30 September, a restriction posted locally on 1 June 2026. The 2026 municipal beach-services document uses the same dates for the beach-service and lifeguard season and lists surf, kayak, SUP, BIG SUP and coasteering as the beach activities without naming kitesurf. The Astondo sector is a Special Area of Conservation holding 177 plant species, 24 of them dune-exclusive and 3 threatened, so keep off the dunes. Paid OTA parking runs every day including Sundays and holidays from 13 June to 15 September 2026, then Saturdays, Sundays and holidays only from 19 September to 12 October; the high-rotation red zone is 0.70 euro an hour with a four-hour cap and the blue zone gives the first 30 minutes free with a ticket. The municipal ordinance page refused connection during this run, so verify the current legal text and any marked exceptions before riding.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Treat 1 June to 30 September as closed unless the town confirms an authorized kite arrangement.
  • Leave a large downwind buffer; the road and the concrete are right behind the sand.
  • Wait for clean W to NW with beach space and few swimmers in the water.
  • Check the Gorliz beach webcam and the flags before driving out, because the town publishes real-time beach information.
  • Do not make this your first spot riding on your own.
  • Outside 1 June to 30 September there are no lifeguards at all: the six-plus-one crew works only those dates, 11:00-20:00.
  • Paid OTA parking runs daily 13 June to 15 September and weekends until 12 October; the promenade car park by the toilets is the closest to the sand.
  • Keep clear of the Astondo dunes when rigging or landing; that sector is a protected conservation area.
