The spot

Furanafushi is a private resort island in North Male Atoll, run as the Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, and it is one of the easiest Maldives spots to reach: a 15-minute speedboat transfer from Velana International Airport.

Water and hazards

The riding is shallow, flat lagoon water with medium waves on it, and the shallow part is as much the problem as the appeal. Reef and wave breakers sit close enough that a bad crash costs skin. High tide is the window; at low water the hazards come up to meet you.

Wind and booking

Wind is light to moderate for most of the year, so pack the big kite. Nobody has published a beginner zone here and the launch itself is undocumented, so treat Full Moon as an intermediate-to-advanced session you clear with the resort first. For a teaching lagoon with rescue cover, book an island that advertises one.

No kite rescue of any kind. The island's watersports base, Extreme Maldives (sheraton@extrememaldives.com, +960 779 2157), runs jet skis, wakeboard, parasail and surf boats but offers no kitesurfing at all, which means no kite instructor on site, no downwind pick-up arranged for kiters and nobody watching the lagoon while you ride.

Agree a pick-up with the boat crew before you launch, or do not launch.

Access is by boat and a short walk. Past that the launch is undocumented: no beach named, no space measured.

The resort watersports centre does not run kitesurfing: no lessons, no rental, no kite rescue. Everything you ride here you carry in yourself.
