The spot

Meerufenfushi, sold everywhere as Meeru Island, is a private resort island on the eastern edge of North Male Atoll, 55-60 minutes by scheduled resort speedboat from Velana International Airport.

As a kite destination

It is a real kitesurf spot, but the resort's own watersports programme lists windsurfing and a long menu of other activities with no kite school or kite rental on it.

Water and conditions

The riding is lagoon: flat water, chop and small wave sections. The west side is the sandy, safer one; the east and north-east side has coral, rocks and low-tide trouble.

The south side needs care, because a strong current and a boat channel run between Meeru and Dhiffushi and the resort map marks strong-current and swimming-prohibited zones.

Wind and seasons

Wind reliability is modest next to the major kite destinations, and the seasons disagree: the wider Maldives favours May-October southwest-monsoon wind, while Meeru has also been rated best in Jan-Apr and Nov-Dec.

Come for a resort holiday with light-wind freeride sessions arranged through the watersports team, not for a guaranteed kite camp.

2026: Meeru is a one-island resort, so beach access runs through a confirmed stay and resort transfer arrangements; no public kite permit or zoning applies, and no kite-specific rule is posted. Shell collection from the beach is forbidden. Personal drones and other flying devices are not permitted. Modest dress is required on resort-organised visits to inhabited local islands.

Ask Euro-Divers or Meeru in writing before you book whether kitesurf launching, storage, rescue, lessons and rental are actually available in 2026; the island's 2026 water sports programme covers catamaran sailing, kayak, SUP, jet ski, waterskiing and windsurfing, and lists no kitesurfing at all.
Pack the larger light-wind kites or the foil only once the resort has confirmed storage and launch permission and you have checked the airline rules for the bag, and leave the drone at home because they are banned on the island.
Ride the west and NW side in the SW monsoon: it is the sandier half and the easier one to learn on.
Bring reef booties and polarized sunglasses for the white-sand glare, and stay off the east/NE side at low tide unless a local instructor confirms depth and coral clearance.
Do not ride into the south channel toward Dhiffushi. The current runs hard there and the boats use it.
Book January or May-October. March is the weakest month by a wide margin and April is not much better.
