Gun Lake

also known as Goose Poop Beach, Gun Lake / Yankee Springs State Park, Gun Lake / Yankee Springs Recreation Area

beginner-friendlymedium crowds

Gun Lake has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

Gun Lake is an inland Michigan lake ridden in two seasons: water in summer, snowkite once it freezes. The launch is Goose Poop Beach, a clearing with a small opening to the water about 75 yards north of the picnic area at the end of State Park Drive, past the boat launch, inside Yankee Springs Recreation Area.
Most of the lake runs 4-5 ft deep, which is what makes it good for flatwater freeride and for anyone still crashing a lot. The launch is the weak point. Trees stand close to the water and the gap is narrow, so keep the kite in the air on land as briefly as you can.
Any direction works, though east makes the launch awkward. Summer weekends bring heavy boat traffic, less of it when it is properly blowing, and winter sessions mean watching for snowmobiles and remembering that your lines are near invisible on snow. Nobody has published a typical wind range or a best-months list for this lake.

synoptic

All directions work, but east wind makes for a harder launch. No independent wind-quality or average-wind figures for this lake.
Ridden as a water spot and as a snowkite spot: the shallow water warms quickly in spring and freezes early in winter.

No knot figure is published for this spot.

Dominant direction

Any direction can work; east is more challenging at launch.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Shallow 4-5 ft water over most of the lake suits every level once you are out there. The launch is another matter: close trees and a small opening to the water mean beginners want a school or a local hand on the beach.

Rules & access
2026: no kite-specific rule found. The launch sits by the Yankee Springs Recreation Area / Gun Lake day-use area, where dogs are allowed along the park lakes except at designated swim beaches, on a 6-foot leash and under immediate control, with waste picked up.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Keep the kite down on land: the tree line comes right to the water and the gap is small.
  • Expect a technical launch on east wind, or wait for a different direction.
  • Skip summer weekend afternoons unless it is blowing hard; the boats thin out when it does.
  • On snow, walk your lines in close to the kite so snowmobilers can see them.
  • Find the clearing about 75 yards north of the picnic area; the boat launch itself is not the spot.
