When it fills in

In summer the south-westerly builds through the afternoon and the dependable sessions are afternoon sessions, often holding into the evening on a warm sunny day. Spring and autumn wind is frontal: it arrives on the front's schedule, at any hour, and can quit just as fast.

Tiscornia Beach sits where the St. Joseph River meets Lake Michigan, north of the long pier and the North Pier Lighthouse. In 15-20 mph southwest wind the water off the sand goes smooth and it is a flat-water session, and in a south wind the jetty blocks the swell as well.
Swing the wind to north or northeast and the same stretch throws long rollers near the pier. The rest of the time it is chop and small-to-medium waves, and the bottom drops away quickly, so this is not a beach to learn on.
Spring and fall are the seasons: summer usually runs too light, and winter belongs to riders who can handle cold water and who will call it off the moment ice starts forming on lines and safety releases.
The pier itself, the anglers on it, the surfers when the break is up and the ordinary public-beach traffic are what decide where you can actually ride. There is no lifeguard and no kite rescue here.

fills in: In summer the south-westerly builds through the afternoon and the dependable sessions are afternoon sessions, often holding into the evening on a warm sunny day. Spring and autumn wind is frontal: it arrives on the front's schedule, at any hour, and can quit just as fast.

Typical strength

Summer afternoons build into 12-18 kt. The flat-water setup people ride for is a 15-20 mph south-westerly, which is 13-17 kt. Spring and autumn frontal days run stronger and much gustier than either figure.

Frontal and fickle Great Lakes wind. Fall gives more wind and wave days than summer, which usually runs light, so fall is the safer bet for a trip.
Better wind and wave days come in fall; surfing can continue through late fall, winter and early spring if ice does not block safe entry/exit, but kiting is unsafe when ice forms on kite lines and safety releases. May-October is generally rideable, with March-May plus September-November as best months.

The quiver, in words

Local practice is a split quiver: 12-17m for the light summer thermal, 5-11m for the gusty spring and autumn fronts. For a 75-85 kg rider that means a 12m as the everyday summer kite with a 14-15m for the bottom of the 12-18 kt band, and a 9m as the first front kite, smaller again when it is really on.

Direction to shore

South-west is the working direction here and comes in cross-onshore along the sand; west to west-south-west is rideable but rougher and suits stronger riders. South and south-south-east look inviting from the car park and are not: the shoreline falls back and the wind ends up effectively offshore. On north to north-east the St. Joseph and Silver Beach side works better than Tiscornia.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Gets deep quite soon; no measured depth profile was found.

Tides

No astronomical tide relevance on Lake Michigan; kitesurfing conditions are reported to not depend on tide at Tiscornia.

Temperature

22°C summer · 2°C winter

Wetsuit

A short wetsuit is reported as probably necessary all year, with a long wetsuit or drysuit used in fall and spring; St. Joseph winter kiting is limited by ice on lines and safety systems.

Currents

No spot-specific current data is published; Lake Michigan rip currents can occur generally, but only cold water, waves and pier proximity are established here.

Lake Michigan beach next to the St. Joseph River, North Pier Lighthouse and long pier, with smooth flat-water kiteboarding in 15-20 mph southwest wind. Conditions otherwise range from flat to chop and small-to-medium waves, and the pier can block waves in south wind.

Your level

not for beginners hereintermediateadvanced
The water can go smooth in the right southwest wind, but the pier, the quickly deepening water, the waves, the cold, the anglers, the surfers and the winter ice all count against a first session here. Nothing confirms Tiscornia as a teaching beach, so beginner is set false until a local confirms otherwise.

Rescue

No lifeguard at Tiscornia and no kite-specific cover. The nearest guarded water is Silver Beach on the other side of the pier, staffed from early June to mid-August, which is the wrong side of the harbour entrance for most kite sessions. Assume full self-rescue, and remember the bottom drops away quickly close in.

Launch

Sandy Lake Michigan beach at Tiscornia Park, north of the St. Joseph pier and adjacent to the St. Joseph River. The launching and landing area is medium-sized, sand with no shells; park amenities include sandy beach, restrooms, pavilion and North Pier Lighthouse walkway.

Rules & access
2026: no kite-specific municipal rule was found for Tiscornia Beach. City of St. Joseph parking at Tiscornia Beach is pay-to-park from April 1-October 31 annually, at the seasonal daily and hourly rates the city posts for 2026. Non-city residents pay per vehicle, and leashed pets are allowed only on the sidewalk and the pier.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Ride Tiscornia for the 15-20 mph southwest flat-water setup; when it swings north to northeast, look at the St. Joseph and Silver Beach side instead.
  • Keep clear of the pier, the lighthouse walkway, the anglers and the boats working the river mouth.
  • Pack more neoprene than an inland forecast suggests. Lake Michigan turns fast and spring and fall sessions are cold.
  • Do not go out if ice can reach your lines, your bar or your quick release.
  • Check the water-quality advisory and the beach signage before you launch during the swim season.
  • Budget for parking at the Tiscornia lot between April 1 and October 31; it is pay-to-park through the whole season.
  • Do not rig for a south or south-south-east wind here. It reads as cross-shore from the beach and behaves as offshore once you are on the water.
  • There is no lifeguard and no kite rescue. The guarded beach is Silver Beach, past the pier, and only from early June to mid-August.
