When it fills in

There is no daily clock to plan around. The useful wind is frontal, so it turns up when the system does, at any hour, and can hold for a day or more; spring and autumn deliver that 1-4 times a week, summer 1-2 times.

Lake St. Clair Metropark sits northeast of Detroit in Harrison Township, and the only confirmed kite access is the Daysail area. The lake is mostly flat, choppy when the wind is up, small waves when it is really up, and shallow for about 1/2 mile on the west side of the launch.
The launch is the limiting factor: a very small patch of grass with trees, parked cars, concrete and rocks all inside the reach of a wandering kite. South and southeast are the steadiest directions, but south is onshore, and west or southwest go gusty because the trees block the grass.
Spring and fall frontal wind is the real season, March-May and September-November, 15-25 knots 1-4 times per week; summer is lighter at 10-15 knots, 1-2 times per week. Launching or landing on the swimming beach is not allowed, and there are no lifeguards there either way. Ships and jet skis use the same water you do.
Not a beginner beach.

Typical strength

10-15 knots in summer; 15-25 knots in spring and fall

South and southeast are the steadiest. Southwest goes gusty, west can be gusty or very gusty because the trees block the grassy launch, and east wind is rare.
The season runs spring, summer and fall. Summer wind is lighter and turns up 1-2 times per week; spring and fall are stronger and come 1-4 times per week.

Thermal or synoptic

frontal

The quiver, in words

Indicative, no local measurement and no rider survey. Spring and autumn frontal days at 15-25 knots put a 75-85 kg rider on 8-10 m; the 10-15 knot summer days want 12-14 m or a foil. West and southwest come through gusty here, which is an argument for sizing down rather than up.

Direction to shore

South is onshore. The exact shore angle for the other directions is unconfirmed.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

The bowl has shallow water for advancing riders, and water stays shallow for about 1/2 mile on the west side of the launch area.

Wetsuit

Air and water temperatures swing hard here. Summer is the only stretch where you might skip a wetsuit; winter needs thick rubber.

Mostly flat Lake St. Clair water, choppy when the wind picks up, small waves when it is really blowing. The water is clean; ships and jet skis are the hazards on it.

Rescue

No lifeguards anywhere in the park, the swimming beach included, and nothing kite-specific: no patrol boat on call for riders, no radio channel, no protocol. A free life-jacket loaner station stands at the beach, first come first served.
In an emergency it is 911 and whatever boat traffic happens to be near you, on water shared with ships and jet skis.

Launch

Launch and land at the Daysail area: a very small grassy launch with trees, cars and chunks of concrete close by. Personal watercraft, windsurfers and sailboards enter at the Daysail launches near the golf course.

Rules & access
Park entry is a $10 daily vehicle or boat pass (2026), or an annual pass; zone and fee rules apply, and launching or landing on the beach is not allowed.
2026: park hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m.-11 p.m. at weekends. Boats need a valid daily or annual boat pass on top of the vehicle pass, unless they are carried inside or on top of a vehicle.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Rig and launch at Daysail; the swimming beach is off limits for launching and landing.
  • On south wind, walk well out from shore before you ride: it is onshore and it will not forgive a slow water start.
  • On west wind ask a local for a water launch, because the trees kill the grass launch.
  • Sort the park pass first: $10 daily vehicle or boat pass (2026), or an annual.
  • Treat ships and jet skis as live traffic, not scenery.
