Oval Beach

also known as Saugatuck, Oval Beach / Saugatuck

advanced onlyhigh crowds

Nearby South Haven 29 km · straight-line distance

Oval Beach at Saugatuck works because of the dune behind it. That dune drives a near-shore thermal that can have the beach blowing hard while sensors a few miles inland read calm, so it fires on sunny south or north wind days and gives you nothing on grey ones.
It is a wide crescent of sand with tall dunes at its back, and the west and northwest exposure puts up enough swell for surfing.
It is also a paid public beach in a tourist town: parking is $15 per car in 2026, collected 8 a.m.-10 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with $75 for a 2026 season pass and free entry from Labor Day to Memorial Day.
City rules cover beach hours, dogs and dune protection, and one of them bans launching watercraft on the beach, which nobody has clarified for kiteboards. Water reaches about 23 C in August and about 1 C in February, so the comfortable window is short. Rider level, rescue and any kite zone are unconfirmed.

Typical strength

Modelled for this shoreline rather than measured, and the model cannot see the dune thermal that makes the spot work. Daily peaks average 10-13 kt; they clear 12 kt on 52-61% of days from October through March and on only 21-28% from June through August. What the numbers miss is the local effect: on a sunny south wind Oval can be blowing hard while readings a few miles inland stay flat.

The big dune drives a near-shore thermal that reaches a short way offshore. It can be calm inland and blowing hard at Oval on a south wind.
The spot fires on south or north wind with sun on the sand, so it is a fair-weather thermal more than a season. Modelled wind for the shoreline is strongest October through March, with a daily peak over 12 kt on 52-61% of days, and weakest June through August at 21-28%; but those windy months are also when the lake sits near 1 C. Which months riders actually use is unconfirmed.

The quiver, in words

No Oval-specific guidance is published. West Michigan riders in the 180-200 lb bracket treat a 12 m or a 14 m as the go-to size for the 13-21 kt this coast usually gives. For a 180 lb rider the regional chart is a 16 m under 13 kt, a 12 m from 13 to 21 kt and a 9 m above 22 kt.Indicative regional figures, not a reading from this beach, and the dune thermal here can put the sand well above what the forecast showed, so bring the smaller kite as well.

Direction to shore

The beach faces west into the lake, so the south and north winds it runs on are both side-shore, straight along the sand. West and northwest are onshore and are what put up the surf. East arrives over the dune from behind, offshore and broken up by it.Read off the shoreline's orientation; no local wind-angle guidance exists.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Wetsuit

No wetsuit guidance is published for Oval Beach. Published Saugatuck water-temperature averages put August around 23 C and February around 1 C, so cold-water protection is needed outside warm summer periods.

Currents

No tide, but the lake has its own: rip, longshore, outlet and channel currents are the recognised dangers on this coast. The Kalamazoo River channel and its piers sit about a kilometre north of the beach, and that is where outlet and channel currents form.

Lake Michigan sand with dunes behind it: a wide crescent bordered by tall dunes, with west and northwest exposure that builds waves for surfing.

Rescue

No lifeguards. The beach is posted swim at your own risk. Emergencies go through 911, which brings the Saugatuck fire department, the Allegan County sheriff's dive and rescue team and the Coast Guard; a 2025 search off the shore between Saugatuck and Holland drew thirteen agencies and still ran nearly four hours.
Nothing on the sand is set up for a kiter in trouble, so plan on self-rescue and a long swim in cold water.

Launch

Launch from the Oval Beach parking area, official address 690 Perryman Street, reached by turning left off Perryman. The beach and its lot are run by the City of Saugatuck, though the lot is commonly called the county lot; parking is paid in season and free out of it.No marked kite area exists and no kite zone has ever been designated.

Rules & access
2026: Oval Beach and the Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area are open 8 a.m.-10 p.m., with the beach season running Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Posted rules: no dogs from Memorial Day Weekend through 30 September, no launching of watercraft on the beach, no alcohol, no smoking, no nudity, no fires, no personal grilling, stay off the dune grass, stay on the trails. Swimming is at your own risk and there are no lifeguards. 2026 parking: $15 day pass sold at the beach only, $75 season pass sold at City Hall and the beach, $20 city-taxpayer pass sold at City Hall only; entry is free from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Whether a kiteboard counts as watercraft under the no-launching rule has never been settled in writing.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Do not trust inland wind readings. The dune thermal can make Oval far windier than anything back from the lake.
  • Check the current Oval Beach rules before you rig, because the city rule against launching watercraft on the beach has never been clarified for kites.
  • Keep off the water during the busiest June, July and August hours, when the sand is full.
  • Stay off the dune grass and use the marked paths.
  • Budget $15 (2026) for parking between Memorial Day and Labor Day, or come in on the Interurban Bus or the Chain Ferry.
  • Nobody is watching the water. There are no lifeguards, the beach is posted swim at your own risk, and the nearest help is a 911 call.
  • The wind and the water are out of phase: October to March is when the modelled wind is best and when the lake is near freezing.
  • Keep well south of the Kalamazoo River channel and its piers, about a kilometre up the beach, where the outlet current runs.
