Nearby Saint Simons Island East Beach 11 km · straight-line distance

Jekyll Island Kite Beach is a quarter-mile of Atlantic sand by the old Blackbeard's access, running north to the Jekyll Island Club Pavilion. At low tide a sandbar reaches out about 1/4 mile and holds shallow water behind it, and that is where the training and the first sessions happen.
NNE through ENE is the working wind, onshore to cross-onshore on this east-facing beach, while the south tip takes S and SW. March through September is the window, with the afternoon sea breeze most likely from late spring into summer; fall and winter are quieter on both wind and people. The catch is tide.
At the highest tide there is barely any beach left, and what remains puts you between the dunes and the walkers and cyclists. Summer sessions come with thunderstorms building over the island, so keep an eye up even when the breeze is clean. Nobody has published a kite-size guide or an average wind speed for this launch.

fills in: Afternoon sea breeze, most reliable from late spring through summer. On a summer day the beach also clears after about 5 PM, which is when the breeze is cleanest and the walkers have thinned out.

Typical strength

No wind station sits on this beach, so treat any number as indicative. Traction kites fly here from about 6-8 mph (5-7 knots) up, given enough beach clear of the high-tide line; a kiteboarding session needs the fuller afternoon sea breeze on top of that.

A tide-sensitive beach launch with more room the lower the water. Fall and winter are emptier and the wind is less consistent.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

Shallow training water forms over the offshore sandbar at low tide.

Tides

Strongly tide dependent. Low, incoming and falling tides are the good ones, and the highest tide can leave too little beach to launch.

Temperature

28-29°C summer · 17-22°C winter

Wetsuit

Board shorts or rash vest in warm months; a 3/2 mm full suit or long wetsuit for the coldest winter water.

Rescue

No lifeguards and no kite rescue on this beach. Emergencies go to 911: say you are on Jekyll Island and give the number of the beach crossover you came in at, because the crossovers are numbered so a location can be passed to the dispatcher. Sandbars carry a standing caution here.

Rules & access
2025 Jekyll Island Authority beach rules ban motorized vehicles, fires, fireworks, glass, overnight camping, metal detectors and walking into the dunes; take care on the sandbars and leave turtle nests alone. Kiteboarders can launch at almost any tide except the highest, and traction kiting at high tide is discouraged because of the dunes and the other beach users (2010 guidance).
Every vehicle pays to enter the island: since 1 July 2023 that is $10 a day, $15 for vehicles over 8 feet, $100 for an annual pass, plus a $5 surcharge on designated event days.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Time the first sessions for low or mid tide; the highest tide leaves too little beach.
  • Stay out of the dunes and keep the kite well clear of walkers and cyclists.
  • Watch for summer thunderstorms building even on a clean sea-breeze afternoon.
  • Use the Great Dunes Park ramp if you are hauling buggy or land-kiting gear.
  • Note the numbered beach crossover you came in at: the island's emergency line is 911 and the crossover is how you give your position.

FAQ

When is the best time to kite Jekyll Island Kite Beach?

The main season runs March through September, with afternoon sea breeze most common in late spring and summer; fall and winter bring fewer crowds but less consistent wind.

Is Jekyll Island Kite Beach good for beginners?

Yes, a low-tide sandbar extending about a quarter mile creates shallow training water, though high tide leaves too little room near the dunes for beginners.

What is the wind like?

Wind is a mix of sea breeze and frontal patterns from the NNE, NE and ENE, with cleaner conditions and more launch room at lower tide.

Are there rules to know?

As of 2025, Jekyll Island Authority beach rules ban motorized vehicles, fires, glass and entering the dunes, and riders are told to avoid the highest tide for traction kiting.

What hazards should riders watch for?

The main hazards are high tide removing launch space, fragile dunes, summer thunderstorms, and pedestrians and bicycles on the beach.
