Jockey's Ridge Soundside Access

also known as Jockey's Ridge, Roanoke Sound access, Bodie Island / Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey's Ridge Soundside Access has no other spot on this map within 40 km of it. straight-line distance

The soundside half of Jockey's Ridge State Park is the part riders want: a small public access on Roanoke Sound at 330 W. Soundside Road in Nags Head, pinned at 35.9525, -75.6320, where kiteboarding and windsurfing sit on the permitted list. Do not drive to the main dune visitor center.
The sound here is shallow and flat to choppy, waist-deep for long stretches, and the riding does not hinge on tide. SW is the direction you want: steady, warm. NE works too, and the summer thermal fills in around 3 p.m., peaks near 7 p.m. and holds to sunset.
Nags Head picks up thermals that sometimes never reach Hatteras Island, which is the argument for driving north instead of south. The beach is small and shared with swimmers and paddlers, so a July afternoon is a launch-management problem more than a wind problem. Nobody has published a typical wind speed or a kite-size range for this access.

fills in: Summer SW thermals are reported starting around 3 p.m., strongest around 7 p.m. and lasting until sunset.

SW is the best direction, steady and warm; Nags Head can get summertime thermals that sometimes do not reach Hatteras Island.
The season runs March-November. June-July is mostly SW, August-September goes patchy, and October-November carries the best odds of the year; winter still delivers on the warmer SW days. Across the region, spring is a mix of SW, NE, NW, N; summer settles into SW.

Direction to shore

The beach here runs roughly NNW-SSE and faces west-southwest across Roanoke Sound. A southwesterly therefore arrives close to straight onshore, and a southerly is side-onshore from your left as you look at the water. Northwest is near enough pure cross-shore.Northeast, the other common direction, blows straight off the beach: the sound is only a few kilometres wide toward Roanoke Island, but the drift in a NE wind takes you away from the only access with parking. These angles are read off the mapped shoreline rather than from a local rider's label.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sound

Standing depth

Shallow; the water is shallow and flat to chop, with Roanoke Sound often waist-deep for long stretches.

Tides

Kitesurfing conditions reportedly do not depend on tide at Bodie Island / Jockey's Ridge.

Temperature

27°C summer · 10°C winter

Wetsuit

Nags Head monthly averages, which are the nearest figures rather than sound readings, put summer water at 25-27 C and winter at 10-12 C. Shorts work from late spring to early fall; you want a suit at either end of the year.

Kiteboarding and windsurfing are permitted at this second access area on Roanoke Sound, alongside swimming and paddling. It is the official state-park soundside access, separate from the dune side.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Any level can ride the sound here. The limit is the launch: a small public access shared with swimmers and paddlers, where you need to get the kite up and down cleanly in a tight space.

Rescue

Nothing is posted about lifeguards or an on-water patrol at the soundside access, so treat it as unguarded. The state park office covers both accesses on 252-573-6108 and jockeys.ridge@ncparks.gov during opening hours; 911 is the emergency number. Outside the gate hours there is nobody on site.
The practical fallback is the sound itself, which is shallow enough to walk in over long stretches.

Rider tips

  • Set the GPS to 330 W. Soundside Road, not the Jockey's Ridge visitor center.
  • Check the soundside hours before you rig: the gate shuts at 5 p.m. January-March and October-December, 7 p.m. April-September.
  • There are 22 paved spaces and one wooden walkway, so get there early on a summer weekend.
  • Rig at the walkway end and leave the swimming and paddling side of the beach clear.
  • Bring sandals for the walk in; the sand gets hot and there are sandspurs.
  • Northeast is the offshore direction here. It blows off the beach and across the sound, so keep the board leashed to a plan, not just to the water.
