Meltemi

15:00

Afternoon. Around 15:00 until sunset on the strong days; otherwise the Meltemi and thermal pattern is simply an afternoon one.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Kedros is a small kite and windsurf beach on the exposed north coast of Samos, between Vathy and Kokkari. Summer wind is Meltemi from N to NW, side-on to onshore, funneled along the Samos-Ikaria strait and strongest in the afternoon: 18-22 knots is the ordinary Meltemi day, with 15-30 knots on the hot ones.
The water is clear and it is not flat. Chop, small to medium wind waves, big pebbles at the shore, a bottom that drops away fast, and shorebreak once the wind is up.
The launch is the real constraint, a bay of roughly 20 x 50 m about 80 m east of Kedros Beach Bar, shared with swimmers and sunbathers, with a sharp rock downwind at the water's edge. Come June to September, bring booties, and bring someone to help you land.
Independent beginners should learn somewhere else on Samos; there is no school and no rescue at Kedros. Whether the beach is formally legal for kitesurfing is unconfirmed for 2026.

fills in: Afternoon. Around 15:00 until sunset on the strong days; otherwise the Meltemi and thermal pattern is simply an afternoon one.

Typical strength

18-22 knots on Meltemi afternoons. 15-30 knots from about 15:00 to sunset was recorded during a heatwave, and 15-25 knots appears elsewhere.

Often consistent in summer when the Meltemi reaches the Samos north coast, but exposed and not beginner-friendly because of shorebreak, rocks and limited launch room.
Main kite season is June-September. The Meltemi is funneled/accelerated along the Samos-Ikaria strait; without Meltemi, a 14-18 knot thermal breeze is reported in the afternoon.

The quiver, in words

Indicative, derived from the wind range rather than from a local rider survey: for 75-85 kg, roughly 8-9 m on an ordinary 18-22 kt Meltemi afternoon, 6-7 m when it pushes to 25-30, and 11-12 m on the 14-18 kt thermal days when the Meltemi is absent. One visiting rider reported a 13 m in 18-24 kt, so what people actually fly here is unsettled.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

No standing area. The beach reportedly drops steeply and gets deep fast, and what you get is chop and waves rather than shallow training water.

Tides

Tide independent; no local tide rule is confirmed.

Temperature

Summer 22.6-24.6 monthly averages Jun-Aug at nearby Kokkari

Winter 16.1-18.4 monthly averages Dec-Mar at nearby Kokkari

Wetsuit

Usually no full wetsuit in July-August; shorty or thin wetsuit useful in June, September or long windy sessions; full wetsuit in winter.

Currents

Coastal currents are mentioned, with no direction or strength confirmed. No quantified current source for Kedros was found.

17–27°C water
Open north-coast Aegean beach, clear water, big pebbles at the shore and a pebbly or sandy seabed farther out. Chop, small to medium wind waves, and shorebreak when the Meltemi is strong. The beach runs about 400 m long and 12 m wide and usually has waves on it.
Water shoes are useful.

Your level

Rescue

None. No lifeguard, no rescue boat, no organised cover for riders. Help is whoever is on the sand and the beach bar behind the launch, which has a phone line; a carabiner is fixed at the launch so you can self-launch alone if you have to.
Cliffs sit upwind and there is nothing easy to land on downwind, so drifting off is not a plan you can fall back on.

Launch

Small launch of coarse gravel about 80 m east of Kedros Beach Bar, in a bay of roughly 20 by 50 m — just enough room to get a kite up. A carabiner is anchored there for self-launching, though a helper is better on the loose stones. The beach and the water in front of it are shared with swimmers and sunbathers, and the parking is at the beach bar.

Rules & access
2026: no Kedros-specific municipal or port-authority rule was found, so the national water-sports rules govern. No riding before sunrise or after sunset or in adverse weather; 200 m from swimmers, anchored boats, rocks, reefs and obstacles; 1 nautical mile from ports and fish farms; no further than 1 nautical mile offshore; a clear 100 m radius to launch and 60 m upwind of bystanders; minimum age 16, with parental consent from 14; above 6 Beaufort an organised operation needs a lifeguard and a motorised rescue boat. On the beach itself the bar asks riders to keep at least 60 m from swimmers. The claim that Kedros is one of only two legal kite spots on Samos comes from a rider report and no authority document confirms it.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the beach first and find the sharp rock downwind and where the swimmers have settled.
  • Get a helper for launch and landing; the bay is roughly 20 x 50 m and leaves no room for a mistake.
  • Keep tricks away from the beach front. Swimmers and sunbathers share the same short strip of pebbles.
  • Bring booties or water shoes for the big pebbles at the shore.
  • Check the shorebreak with your own eyes before committing, not just the Meltemi forecast.
  • There is a carabiner anchored at the launch if you end up alone, but ask at the bar for a hand before you use it.
  • Stay off the strait. Nothing comes to get you, the cliffs are upwind, and the current runs through there.
