The spot

La Tranche-sur-Mer is a real Vendée kite spot with one detail that matters more than the rest: in season the only place you may kite is Plage du Phare. Not the town beach, and never Belle Henriette, which is off-limits all year.

Water and wind

The water is exposed Atlantic, chop on a normal day and waves when swell arrives, so it reads as independent freeride, strapless and wing riding rather than somewhere to have your first day alone. Working directions are SW, W and S in a 12-28 kt band across an April-October season, with clean side-shore NW at Grande Plage and some afternoon thermal help in summer.

Launch and crowds

The launch is sand and there is plenty of beach outside the peak weeks, but in July-August you get bathers, surfers, windsurfers and wingfoilers on the same strip and the marked zones are not a suggestion. Low water brings the bouchots out nearby, and the baïnes and traversing currents are real.

Lessons

Lessons run in town at the Centre Nautique Tranchais, and La Faute-sur-Mer teaches from a boat on the shallow Pointe d'Arçay sandbank five minutes away. Read the beach signage before you rig, because it changes.

Some sandy standing-depth sections are reported, especially around low-water/flat areas, but the official kite area is an open Atlantic beach rather than a learner lagoon.

Tides

Tidal Atlantic beach, and the two tides give two different spots. Around high water the surface is choppy but the beach is clean and the mussel-farm stakes are covered, which is why local advice is to ride the high-water window.At low water the sand comes out, the water flattens and the riding turns more technical, with bouchots showing nearby. The surf break itself works at every stage of the tide; the kite advice is narrower than that.

Rescue

Lessons carry their own cover: the town's nautical centre teaches in groups of four maximum with its own safety equipment, and the school at La Faute-sur-Mer, about five minutes away, runs a 6 m RIB for teaching and pick-ups on the Pointe d'Arcay sandbank. Nothing equivalent exists for independent riders at Plage du Phare: no kite marshal, no club boat, and the summer lifeguard cover is for the bathing zones. Plan a self-rescue and a walk back up the beach; at sea the emergency number is 196.

2026: from May to September, kitesurfing at La Tranche-sur-Mer is authorised only at Plage du Phare; outside that window you can kite around La Tranche-sur-Mer except at Belle Henriette.

Préfecture maritime arrêté n°2011/47, from 2011, creates a kite-surf evolution zone in front of Plage du Phare west of the bunker, excludes kite-surf from the Grande Plage channel, and bans anchoring, fishing and diving inside the channels, the bathing zones and the kite evolution zone. It applies when the buoyage is in place.

From May to September go straight to Plage du Phare, and check the day's marked kite zone before you rig.
Do not kite Belle Henriette. It is banned, all year.
Ride the high-water window; the bouchot stakes show at low tide.
On swell days leave room for the surfers, windsurfers, wingfoilers and longboarders. Plage du Phare is a shared beach, not a kite beach.
Do not plan a session off published averages for Le Phare: that station has no statistics behind it, so read the live wind and the beach.
There is no rescue behind you outside a lesson. Ride with someone, carry something to signal with, and if you are still learning, book a school.

Airport

La Rochelle - Île de Ré Airport and Nantes Atlantique Airport are listed by the municipality; the municipality gives 60 km to La Rochelle and 100 km to Nantes.

Route

By road to La Tranche-sur-Mer; by public transport combine train to La Roche-sur-Yon, Les Sables-d'Olonne, Luçon or La Rochelle with Aléop buses. Municipal bus lines 550 and 555 connect from Les Sables-d'Olonne and La Roche-sur-Yon. In summer the free Fun Bus serves about 50 stops around La Grière, the centre and La Terrière.

Transfer

About 60-90 minutes by car from La Rochelle or Nantes depending on route/traffic; public transport can take several hours because it requires train/bus connections.
