On the clock

10:00 · 11:00

Early morning for the summer SE breeze; it usually drops between 10:00 and 11:00 as the land warms.

The marks are the clock times the record names, laid on a 24-hour day. The bar between the first and the last covers those hours; it is not a promise of wind.

Boyardville is on the sheltered east side of Ile d'Oleron, looking across the Pertuis d'Antioche at Fort Boyard, and the water is what that implies: flat to choppy, standable over much of the bay, and out of reach of the Atlantic swell. The wind is the weak point.
ESE to SE is the direction that works, side-on to the beach, and in summer that means an early-morning thermal of 8-10 knots that usually dies between 10:00 and 11:00 as the land heats up; if you are not rigged at sunrise you will watch it go.
Foilers and beginners do well on that light morning breeze on a rising or high tide, because low water leaves the inside of the bay too shallow to foil. East wind has a stronger gradient above 20 m and south wind gets turbulent near the trees.
The beach north of the village near the Cafe de la Plage is over 1000 m long, so launching is never the problem; the problem in July and August is that the buoyed bathing zone is off limits to kites at any hour, the anchored boats are off limits too, and the lifeguard post opens at 11:00, which is about when the wind quits anyway.
Wear booties. The bay floor has mussels on it and they cut.

Typical strength

Summer morning SE thermal around 8-10 knots. A climate dataset shows a 21.6 kt average with no explanation of how it was calculated; do not plan a trip on it.

Sheltered and flat to choppy; east wind can have stronger gradient above 20 m, and south wind becomes turbulent near the trees.
Summer works at dawn or after the lifeguards leave; in between, the bathing zone and the beach crowd own the water in July and August.

Direction to shore

The beach faces east, so E to SE blows onshore to side-on. N, NE, E, SE get called side-on or side-shore in one description and onshore off the channel in another; the practical reading is E to SE, angled.

Dominant direction

ESE to SE is the main direction. N, NE, E, SE all get listed as workable; the east-to-south-east sector is the one everyone agrees on.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

Standing depth

Standable/partly shallow; low tide leaves the inside of the bay short of depth for foil.

Tides

Tidal Atlantic bay; low tide is flatter but shallower, high tide is more comfortable for foil and still leaves launch space.

Temperature

20.6°C summer · 9.4°C winter

Wetsuit

Shorts or shorty may be enough in summer; thick winter wetsuit for November to February conditions.

9–22°C water
Sheltered east-coast Oleron bay facing the Pertuis d'Antioche, with flat to choppy water, little swell at low tide and views toward Fort Boyard.

Rescue

A supervised bathing post works the beach in high season, roughly 11:00 to 19:00, and it covers swimmers inside the buoys rather than kiters outside them. No club safety boat and no kite-specific rescue for independent riders was confirmed.
The port of Boyardville sits just south of the beach with fishing and pleasure traffic moving through the channel, so boats are around, but nothing is on call for you.

Launch

Launch from the long sandy beach north of Boyardville village near the Cafe de la Plage access, staying outside the supervised bathing area and the anchored-boat zone.

Space

More than 1000 m of beach and room to launch even at high tide; in summer the beach crowd spreads into parts of the kite area.

Hazards riders report 11

  • Mussels in the bay; booties recommended
  • Anchored boats and forbidden boat area
  • Summer beach users after late morning
  • Turbulence near trees in southerly wind
  • Mussels in the bay; booties are described as indispensable
  • Supervised bathing area is forbidden to kitesurfers
  • Anchored-boat zone must not be crossed
  • Turbulence if the wind turns south, especially near trees
  • Low tide exposes or shallows the inside of the bay
  • Rare underwater stones and visible rocky groynes south of the bathing zone
  • Oyster/mussel farming areas on this coast; respect stakes and navigation channels
Rules & access
2026: a Prefecture Maritime de l'Atlantique order (n°2024/120, 12 June 2024) sets the swimming zones and the shore-to-open-water crossing channels for the beaches of Saint-Georges-d'Oleron. The channel it reserves for towed boards ('planches nautiques tractees') runs from the shore of the neighbouring Plage de Plaisance out to open water, not from Boyardville; Boyardville's own crossing channels are for windsurfers and unregistered sailing boats. In practice the beach north of the village is the kite launch. Kitesurfing is banned inside the buoyed bathing zone at any hour, and banned during the supervised bathing hours of about 11:00 to 19:00 in high season, which is why the local rhythm is dawn sessions and after 19:00. The anchored-boat area is off limits as well. O'Take's club charter bans kitesurf from bathing zones and from areas reserved for other activities. In summer the beach barrier is open only in the morning.

Rider tips

  • Be rigged at sunrise for the summer SE thermal; it is 8-10 knots and usually gone between 10:00 and 11:00.
  • Booties, always: the bay floor has mussels on it.
  • Foil on a rising or high tide and drift east, offshore, as the inside of the bay shallows out; low water is too thin to foil on.
  • Never enter the buoyed bathing zone or the anchored-boat area, even before the lifeguard post opens at 11:00 or after 19:00.
  • In summer park in the larger car park about 150 m before the Cafe de la Plage when the barrier at the beach is down.
  • Ask at one of the schools about this year's sandbank and where the bathing buoys sit; the bank moves and the layout changes.
  • The kite channel in the 2024 prefecture order is at Plage de Plaisance next door, not here; at Boyardville you launch from the beach north of the village and stay outside the supervised bathing zone.

FAQ

Is Boyardville suitable for beginners?

Yes, it is often rated beginner or near-beginner in the right wind, though summer bathing zones and mussels in the bay call for local awareness.

What is the wind like at Boyardville?

ESE to SE is the key summer direction, typically 8-10 knots in the morning and commonly fading around 10:00 to 11:00.

Are there rules or restricted zones at Boyardville?

Kiting is authorized except inside the supervised bathing zone; in high season, ride before the lifeguard post opens at 11:00 or after 19:00.
