Chatelaillon-Plage is the family beach 17 km south of La Rochelle in Charente-Maritime: 3 km of sand in a protected bay, shallow, flat to choppy, with small waves once the breeze gets up.
The wind is Atlantic synoptic with a sea-breeze top-up, typically 10-22 knots, and N, S, SW and NW all work; NW to SW come in side-shore from the left and are the cleaner directions, N or S blow more onshore. Come at high tide.
At low water the sea retreats a long way and you walk 100-200 m over mud and sharp shells to find it, depending on the coefficient. The kite area is at the south end, before the dike, and the oyster parks past the harbour-dike line on the left are off limits at low and mid tide.
Regulation is the constraint that matters: kitesurfing is banned from 15 June to 15 September, 9:00 to 19:00, and the official municipal text has not been found online, so treat the ban as in force and ask at the lifeguard post. Spring or early autumn, on a tide with enough water and a western-sector breeze, is the visit that works.

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

You have your feet down across most of the rideable bay on small and medium tidal coefficients. On a big coefficient at low water the sea is 100-200 m out and you carry the gear over mud and shell to reach it.

Tides

Ride high tide. The sea goes out a long way, and at low water on a big coefficient you walk 100-200 m over mud to reach it.

Temperature

20.6°C summer · 9.7°C winter

Wetsuit

Use a full suit most of the year; summer water around La Rochelle averages about 20-21 C, while winter averages under 10 C.

9–23°C water
Long sandy bay south of La Rochelle. Flat on a light day, chop and small waves once the breeze builds or swell gets in; easy water for lessons outside the bathing season and never demanding for an experienced rider.

Your level

beginnerintermediateadvanced
Good for beginners with a school and for confirmed riders; the shells, the oyster parks and the summer ban mean you need to be self-sufficient the rest of the time.

Rescue

The Grande Plage is lifeguarded in season, which is exactly the period (15 June to 15 September) when kites are banned; no kite rescue service has been confirmed.

Launch

The signposted kite zone is at the south end of the 3 km beach, before the dike, with several accesses off the seafront boulevard. The school moves onto the south beach in summer. Launch size follows the tide.

Space

Long sandy beach, but the kite area is constrained by bathers, summer ban reports, wavebreakers and shellfish/oyster areas.

Hazards riders report 10

  • Oyster parks / digue limits near the southern side
  • Beach users in season
  • Oyster parks on the left/southern side; avoid passing the harbour-dike line at low or mid tide.
  • Mud and sharp shells near the shore at low tide.
  • Wavebreakers.
  • Bathers and other beach users, especially June, July and August.
  • Reported kitesurf ban from 15 June to 15 September.
  • Small waves/chop increase when the breeze strengthens.
  • Pleasure-boat traffic running to and from La Rochelle crosses the outer bay.
  • East wind is inconsistent here and not worth rigging for.
Rules & access
2026: kitesurf is forbidden at Chatelaillon-Plage from 15 June to 15 September, 9:00 to 19:00 daily; outside those hours, and outside the 15 June-15 September window entirely, kitesurf is not restricted by this rule. In season, the general kite area lies between allée Alexandre Bernard and allée André, with a zone reserved for kitesurf schools between allée Roger and chemin de la Marine.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Treat 15 June to 15 September, 9:00 to 19:00, as closed to kites unless the mairie or the lifeguard post confirms otherwise on the day.
  • Arrive around high tide; at low water on a big coefficient you walk 100-200 m over mud and shells before you reach the sea.
  • Stay on the beach side of the harbour-dike line at low and mid tide; the oyster parks on the left are not rideable.
  • Wear booties: the shore is mud and broken shell once the tide drops.
  • Set up at the south end before the dike, between allée Alexandre Bernard and allée André; the school zone is between allée Roger and chemin de la Marine.
  • Ask Chatel Kite School or the lifeguard post which zone is in use before you rig.
