When it fills in

A trade-wind spot, not a sea-breeze one. When the alizés are established the wind is already there in the morning and holds through the day rather than switching on at a set hour. From November to March a thermal reinforcement stacks on top of the trades, which is part of why that is the strong season. No hour-by-hour pattern has been published for this beach.

The spot

Le Méridien is the Pointe Magnin end of Anse Vata, straight in front of the Le Méridien Nouméa hotel, and it is a confirmed-rider spot rather than a beginner beach.

Riding conditions

The pull is very flat lagoon water under regular SE/E trades, which is why it is the local freestyle reference. The catch is the angle: the wind is offshore, so every metre you lose downwind takes you further into the bay.

You need to ride upwind before you come here, and you need the tide, because low water brings up coral heads.

Who it suits

Shore space is small and the best windy days fill it with Nouméa's strongest riders, so launch and land with discipline or wait your turn. Beginners are better off with a school running boat-supported lessons at Îlot Maître, Îlot Goéland or in deep water off Anse Vata.

As of 2025, Nouméa's coastal marking and zoning were revised by municipal order no. 2024-2029 of 11 September 2024, and government order no. 2025-575/GNC of 2 April 2025 created an 'ANSR' zone between Anse-Vata and Île aux Canards reserved for nautical activities.

No permit requirement or exact kite launch corridor for Plage du Méridien has been confirmed from an official map, so read the posted Nouméa beach zoning before you launch.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Do not ride here unless you ride upwind consistently and can self-rescue in offshore wind.
Check the tide before you drive down; exposed coral heads at low water are documented.
Take Aquarêve next door for a more side-on angle, but its launch is still called delicate for beginners.
Ask a school or a local rider about the current ANSR and Anse Vata zoning before launching; the marking plan changed in 2024 and the maritime rules changed again in 2025.
On crowded freestyle days, wait for a clean launch and landing window and respect the rotation on the flat.
Keep a weather margin in February-April, when cyclones and active depressions can make sport unsafe or prohibited.
If you foil, keep an eye out for turtles in the lagoon — it is a stated local concern, not a footnote.
March is the wet end of the season: the trades are still there, and so is the rain.

Nouméa-La Tontouta International Airport (NOU), about 52 km north of Nouméa; Nouméa-Magenta is the domestic airport.

From La Tontouta, use a pre-booked private/shared shuttle, taxi, or rental car to Nouméa's Anse Vata hotel strip. In Nouméa, the spot is at Pointe Magnin by Le Méridien/Château Royal at the southeast end of Anse Vata.
