The spot

The beach and break

Malibu is the kite name for Ganh Beach, on the northern/eastern side of the Mui Ne peninsula, reached from the Ham Tien kite strip by scooter or taxi. Source Kiteboarding and KITENAM run stations on it. Wide sand, flatter water close in, then clean spaced waves outside: mornings belong to lessons, the outside line to strapless, freeride and big air.

Season and wind

The season is the northeast monsoon, roughly November to April, and January to March is the hardest and busiest of it. Go early if you want it soft. Afternoons commonly build to 20-30 kt with bigger surf, and the same launch feels like a different beach by evening.

Safety notes

Access runs through the resorts, which makes Malibu less convenient than the central beach and usually emptier, with cleaner wind. Treat it as open ocean: launch near the school staff, stay off the rocks and the headland, and do not assume it stays friendly once the wind and the swell are up.

For a 75-85 kg rider in the December-February peak, 9-12 m is the working range and a 7 m goes up on the strong afternoons. The 12 m earns the light morning and comes down through the day as the thermal builds. Indicative sizing for Mui Ne, not measured at this beach.

Steady and strong through the northeast season. Malibu/Ganh gets smoother air than Ham Tien because less land stands in the way. The afternoon is stronger and harder work.

Main season runs October/November to April/May and peaks January-March. From May/June to October the southwest wind is lighter and less reliable, and on the days it turns up it is a foil or big-kite proposition.

Semi-diurnal, with a modest range. At the Phan Thiet gauge along the coast a September 2026 day ran about 1.6 m between high and low, high water near 3.5-3.6 m and low around 1.9-2.6 m. Launching is more work at high water: the dry sand narrows and the shorebreak lands closer in.

There is less shelter here than at Rang/Ham Tien, so swell shows up sooner. No reef was confirmed at the Malibu launch itself, but there are rocks along parts of Malibu/Hon Rom.

Rescue

No public lifeguard covers this beach. The two schools on the sand run their own beach assistance and staff during their opening hours; a rescue boat and jet ski are listed for the combined Rang Beach / Ganh Beach / Suoi Nuoc area rather than for Malibu alone, and outside school hours there is nobody watching.

Vietnam's public numbers are 115 for an ambulance, 113 for police and 114 for fire and rescue.

Launch

Wide sand launch at Ganh/Malibu, with access usually through a beachfront resort such as Nam Chau/Malibu Resort or Blue Shell Resort. The flat zone inside and the wave line outside make mornings workable for lessons; the afternoon raises the bar.Stay off the rocky sections and the headland, and rig near the school staff when there are any on the sand.

As of 2026 no Malibu-specific permit rule for individual recreational riders was found. Bình Thuận Decision 51/2013/QĐ-UBND, issued by the province that governed this coast until Bình Thuận was dissolved into Lâm Đồng on 12 June 2025, covered sea-sport businesses: business registration and operating-condition certificates, marked activity zones, rescue plans, nothing inside swimmer zones, operating hours 05:00-18:00. Related later decisions were repealed in 2022/2023, and in 2024 the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism had issued operating-condition certificates to 17 kitesurfing service businesses.

Book lessons and progression sessions for the morning, before the thermal and the surf come up.
Bring a 7-12 m quiver; most riders step down through the day as the wind fills in.
Go through a school launch the first time rather than hunting your own way down through the resorts.
Keep well clear of the rocky headland and of any rocky sections the beach staff point out.
On a no-wind morning, check the surf or take a SUP out at Ganh before the wind arrives.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), Ho Chi Minh City; whether Phan Thiet/Mui Ne airport is open for scheduled civilian passengers in 2026 is unconfirmed.

Route

Malibu/Ganh is on the far side of the Mui Ne peninsula from the Ham Tien kite strip, about 7 km from the central resort area and a 15-20 minute drive; scooter or taxi, then in through a beachfront resort such as Nam Chau/Malibu Resort or Blue Shell.From Ho Chi Minh City it is a private transfer, a taxi or limousine, a bus, or the train to Phan Thiet with local transport for the last leg.The schools arrange private transfers.
