Nearby Genipabu - Barra do Rio 30 km · straight-line distance

Maracajaú is a fishing and tourism village on the north coast of Rio Grande do Norte, 55-58 km from Natal, with a medium-sized sandy beach launch and kite centers right on it.
The Alísios come from the east to southeast, side-on for SE and more onshore for E, 15-20 knots in the best months; the wider RN coast can see 18-30 kt. Season is July through November or December, and some years it runs into January.
Outside the bay you get chop and small waves in clean water; inside there is a wide, very shallow calm area where the lessons happen, which is why the schools like it. Water is 29 C in summer and 26 C in winter, so boardshorts and a rash vest.
Rocks at both ends of the beach are the main hazard, then the tour boats: the parrachos reef trips sit downwind of the central beach and the bathers are in the same stretch. Whether the spot is tide independent is disputed; the tidal range is considerable, so look at the table.
No ATM and no gas station in the village, so bring cash and a full tank from Natal.

The quiver, in words

At the 15-20 kt the season normally delivers, a 75-85 kg rider is on 9-12 m. Keep a 7-8 m for the afternoons that push toward the top of the 12-25 kt seasonal range, and a 12-14 m for the edges of the season. Indicative, derived from the published wind range: no local quiver has been documented.

Direction to shore

Side-onshore for SE; E is more onshore/side-on depending on exact beach angle.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

Standing depth

A wide area of very shallow calm water in the bay; exact depths unknown.

Tides

Rideable through the tide on paper, but the range is considerable and it changes what is around you: the offshore parrachos pools only form near low water, which is exactly when the tour boats and snorkellers are out on the reef. Read the table before you plan the session.

Rescue

No dedicated rescue. In season the kite centres on the beach are the practical help, and the only other craft on the water are the small reef-tour boats running out to the parrachos. Nothing paid or on-call is confirmed for independent riders, so ride with someone and keep a self-rescue margin.
Ashore, the emergency number for the fire brigade is 193.
