Early afternoon. The Nortada thermal switches on around 13:00-14:00 and holds through the afternoon, easing toward evening; the legal cut-off is one hour before sunset. Mornings are generally too light and too variable to plan a session on. Winter frontal wind does not follow this pattern and can blow at any hour.

The spot

Meia Praia is the long sandy bay running east from Lagos toward the Ria de Alvor, and it is a working local kite and wing spot rather than a tourist beach that happens to get wind.

Summer catch

The catch is the angle. The summer Nortada arrives offshore to cross-offshore on this south-facing bay, which flattens the water to glass and at the same time pushes you steadily out to sea, so boat support here is the standard local prescription and not a nicety. That suits freeride and wingfoil, and riders who have already done a real self-rescue; it does not suit a first day.

Winter and wave season

From October to March, south, southeast and west systems come in side-onshore and Meia Praia turns into one of the better wave options on the Algarve south coast, with heavier shorebreak and more current as the price.

Launch restrictions

The sand is legally almost full: sunbed concessions and signed bathing units take up most of the beach in season, and you cannot launch or land inside them. Beginners should skip it and book at Alvor Lagoon, which is where the schools teach anyway. April and October sit outside the busy months and still catch the Nortada.

Two different spots share one bay. From roughly April to September the Nortada blows offshore to cross-offshore here, giving flat, glassy water but pushing riders out to sea, which is why boat support is the standard local prescription rather than a nicety - and why this is a better wingfoil spot than kite spot in summer.

Deep. Unlike the shallow sandbars of the nearby lagoon, the open beach shelves away quickly and there is no wading area to sort out a kite in. Shallower, standable water appears only toward the Alvor lagoon end, and even there it depends on the tide.

The tide matters most at the Alvor end, where the ebb draws water out of the Ria de Alvor and the current through the inlet gets strong.Along the open sand the tide changes the shore break and how much dry beach you have to rig on rather than whether the spot works at all. No public kite rescue. Sea emergencies go through 112 or direct to the maritime authority's operations centre on +351 214 401 919; the Policia Maritima here sits under Capitania do Porto de Lagos. The practical answer at Meia Praia is a boat.

Summer conditions and rescue

The summer wind is offshore, the water is deep, and the standing local advice is not to ride here in summer without boat support or a worked-out self-rescue plan. The two rulebooks set different thresholds for when a boat becomes compulsory - 750 m from shore under the 2026 municipal training rules, 2 nautical miles under the capitania edital - so the conservative number is the one to plan around.

Lifeguards cover the signed bathing units in season and are not a kite rescue.

Two regulatory systems

2026: two sets of rules overlap at Meia Praia, and only one of them is about schools.

General kitesurfing rules

Capitania do Porto de Lagos Edital n.o 173/2016 of 24 February 2016 binds every rider, not just licensed operators. Kitesurfing is allowed only between sunrise and one hour before sunset and only in good visibility. During the bathing season riders must launch and land through the marked corridors; where no corridor exists they may do so only in unconcessioned areas, and only if there is no concessioned area within 500 m downwind.

Distance restrictions

Kitesurfing is prohibited within 100 m of the shoreline at undesignated, unconcessioned beaches, within 300 m of bathing zones, and beyond 2 nautical miles from shore without a support boat, which may cover at most four riders staying within visual range and no more than half a nautical mile off.

Licensed training zone

Separately, the 2026 Lagos municipal procedure for kitesurf and windsurf training licences grants kitesurf licensing exclusively for Meia Praia, in the zone between the west mole of the Ria de Alvor and the end of bathing unit 11 at 37 07 04 N, 008 37 05 W; in NE, E and SE winds trainers must keep students at least 500 m from bathing unit 11.

Training requirements

Training requires a helmet and a lifejacket or buoyancy aid throughout, a wing safety system during the land phase, a maximum of one coach to three students, good visibility from sunrise to one hour before sunset, no kitesurfing above force 7 Beaufort (33 kt), no activity under an IPMA orange wind warning, and motorboat support beyond 750 m from shore for up to four riders.

Seasonal training rules

During the bathing season licensed activity must stay outside the signed bathing units; outside the bathing season it may use the full beach. Sunbed concessions cover most of the beach in summer and kites may not be launched or landed inside them.

Meia Praia runs about 3 km east of Lagos town centre, roughly a ten-minute drive: take the N125 toward Portimao and turn right after the marina bridge, following the Meia Praia signs.
