When it fills in

The SW is thermal. Along this coast it usually switches on in the early afternoon, builds, then fades toward evening, and that is the pattern to expect here, though nobody has timed it on this beach. The E-SE Levante is synoptic and can be blowing at any hour, before dawn included.

Praia Grande de Pêra sits on a long sand beach between Salgados and Armação de Pêra, and it works for kitesurf and wingfoil rather than for a first lesson. The water is flat in places, choppy in others, with small waves; winter swell or Levante puts more wave energy in.
March to October is the season, 12-22 knots, usually a SW sea breeze or E-SE Levante. The central Algarve gets less Nortada than the coast farther west, and when the NW does blow in summer it comes off the land on this south-facing beach, which is why you check the direction before you drive over.
Space is not the problem: the beach is huge. Swimmers are. In July and August the bathing zones fill up and the 2026 beach notice keeps kites out of the areas reserved for bathers, so you rig at the edges and stay there.
Nobody has confirmed a kite rescue service or a marked kite corridor here.

fills in: The SW is thermal. Along this coast it usually switches on in the early afternoon, builds, then fades toward evening, and that is the pattern to expect here, though nobody has timed it on this beach. The E-SE Levante is synoptic and can be blowing at any hour, before dawn included.

Typical strength

12-22

Seasonal and direction-dependent. The Nortada reaches this part of the central Algarve weaker than it does farther west, reportedly.
Wind runs all year, with March to October the best of it. In practice Praia Grande is a winter option: it wants cross-on to onshore S-SW, the Nortada is weak in this stretch of the Algarve, and the summer NW blows offshore.

The quiver, in words

Nothing spot-specific is published. Indicative for a 75-85 kg rider against the 12-22 kt range here: 12 m for the light early phase of the sea breeze or a soft Levante, 9-10 m once the thermal is established, 7-8 m on a strong Levante or a strong winter S-SW. Derived from the wind range, not from local measurement.

Direction to shore

On this south-facing beach, S-SW is onshore to cross-onshore; SW-W is side-on to side-shore; NW/Nortada tends offshore.

modelled

A weather model's cell over this place, not a station on it. Good for comparing places, weaker for one beach.

Modelled from weather reanalysis on a 10–25 km grid (2022-2024), not a ground station: reliable for trade and synoptic winds, understates thermal sea breezes and valley winds. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

ocean

Standing depth

Open ocean sand, so there is no shallow flat to plan around: you wade the shorebreak and then it drops away. The water close in is normally calm and is used for family swimming. No measured depth is published, and the spot rides at any tide.

Tides

Reportedly tide independent.

Temperature

21-22°C summer · 15-17°C winter

Wetsuit

A 3/2 or 3/4 mm full suit covers most Algarve sessions. A shorty works in the warmest late-summer water, and winter wants 4/3 mm, or a warm 3/2 with boots if you feel the cold.

16–19°C water
Open Atlantic sand beach: flat patches, chop, small waves. Winter swell or Levante puts more size in the water.

Rules & access
2026: the national beach notice bans surf, kitesurf, windsurf and similar activities inside areas reserved for bathers. Stay out of the middle of the swimmer zones on weekends and through the summer holidays.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Look at the wind arrow before you commit: a summer NW blows offshore on this beach.
  • Rig at the ends of the beach, away from the bathing zones, in July and August.
  • Bring the wave board for a winter S-SW; the swell turns it into a wave day, not a freeride day.
  • Read the beach signs when you arrive: the 2026 notice keeps kites out of the areas reserved for bathers.
  • Come in on the coast road between Salgados and Armação de Pêra and follow the signs to Praia Grande.
  • The sea breeze wants the afternoon. A morning drive over usually means waiting for it.
  • For 75-85 kg, a 9-10 m covers the established thermal; take a 12 m for the light phase and a 7-8 m for a strong Levante.

FAQ

Is it suitable for beginners?

Sources vary; some list it for all levels while others call it intermediate, so suitability depends on wind direction, crowding and supervision.

When is the best time?

March to October is the best season, with 12-22 knot SW thermal wind or E-SE Levante; summer NW wind tends to blow offshore here.

What are the rules?

A 2026 beach notice prohibits kitesurfing and similar activities in areas reserved for bathers, and riders should avoid the middle of swimmer zones on weekends and in summer.

What are the hazards?

Seasonal crowds and swimmers are the main issue in summer, and summer Nortada wind can blow offshore, so check the direction before rigging.
