Ria de Alvor (Alvor Lagoon)
Widely considered the best kitesurfing spot in the western Algarve and one of the top learning venues in Europe: a vast, shallow saltwater lagoon inside a protected natural park, separated from the open Atlantic by a sand dune. Consistent afternoon thermal wind, waist-to-chest-deep flat water, and no real surf hazards make it a magnet for beginner schools (several have run here since 2006) while still offering enough space and wind for advanced freestyle and big air.

Wind
| best months |
|
|---|---|
| season notes | Windy season runs April-October, with May-August the most consistent |
| avg knots | 18-25 |
| wind name | Nortada (thermal) |
| direction to shore | side-onshore to cross-shore depending on launch point; best from N/NW, which reliably fills in during the afternoon; W is gusty/unpredictable, E is blocked by Alvor town |
| quality | thermal |
| typical kite sizes | 9-12m (7m on strong days, smaller for lighter riders) |
Water
| type | flat, shallow saltwater lagoon |
|---|---|
| wetsuit | Shorty May-September; spring suit or full suit for shoulder season (spring/autumn) |
| tides | Spring tides can exceed a 3m range and dramatically change the rideable area; incoming tide pushes riders upwind (helpful), outgoing tide is trickier; mid-to-high tide is generally optimal |
| currents | Four main current zones; strong currents near the main channel and rocks on the southern side, worst on spring tides |
| standing depth | waist to chest deep across most of the lagoon |
Levels
| beginner | yes |
|---|---|
| intermediate | yes |
| advanced | yes |
| notes | One of the most beginner-friendly lagoons in Europe at mid-tide, while high tide opens up enough space and power for advanced freestyle and big air. |
Launch & crowd
| description | Six recognised launch areas around the lagoon: Lagos Kite Beach (main, busiest, 5-min walk, where most schools meet), Fish Farm Corner (school meeting point), Mexilhoeira/'Mexico' (local favourite, tricky in big waves), the Windsurf Spot (wind-shadowed, better for windsurfers), Alvor Lagoon Beach (most underrated, longer walk but easy return), and a dedicated Safety Beach for riders struggling to get back upwind. Free parking near the dunes at four main areas: Lagos, the fish farms, Rocha Delicada, and Praia de Alvor near the Restinga restaurant/marina. |
|---|---|
| rescue | Boat traffic present in the channel; no formal rescue service mentioned, several schools operate on site |
| busy months |
|
| vibe | Busy with schools at Lagos Kite Beach and at mid-to-low tide in summer, but the lagoon is large enough to spread out; Mexilhoeira and the Alvor Lagoon Beach launch are more local/uncrowded |
Hazards
- Oyster farms hidden at high tide - owners do not want riders near them
- Rocks and strong currents on the southern side of the lagoon
- Fishermen's cages appear at mid-tide
- Boat traffic in the main channel in summer
- Sharp shells and dried reeds on the shore - surf shoes recommended
- Strong spring-tide currents can pull riders offshore toward the channel
Rules
- Inside a protected natural park - stay out of wildlife nesting/migration habitat zones; rangers enforce restrictions and fines during migration season
- Avoid riding over the oyster farms
Tips
- Plan sessions around the tide more than the wind - incoming tide is the safer choice
- Best wind builds reliably in the afternoon as the thermal kicks in
- Avoid riding the lagoon on a high-to-low spring tide transition
- Surf shoes are effectively mandatory for the shore
- Bring water/snacks - it's a walk back from some launch points
- SUP is a good option on lighter-wind days
