Ria de Alvor (Alvor Lagoon)

Widely considered the best kitesurfing spot in the western Algarve and one of the top learning venues in Europe: a vast, shallow saltwater lagoon inside a protected natural park, separated from the open Atlantic by a sand dune. Consistent afternoon thermal wind, waist-to-chest-deep flat water, and no real surf hazards make it a magnet for beginner schools (several have run here since 2006) while still offering enough space and wind for advanced freestyle and big air.

Launch & crowd

Plan sessions around the tide more than the wind - incoming tide is the safer choice
Best wind builds reliably in the afternoon as the thermal kicks in
Avoid riding the lagoon on a high-to-low spring tide transition
Surf shoes are effectively mandatory for the shore
Bring water/snacks - it's a walk back from some launch points
SUP is a good option on lighter-wind days
