Nea Iraklitsa, the beach everyone calls Alana, is a long sandy bay on the Kavala coast with shallow water and a gradual entry. It shows up as a kitesurfing forecast point, but the documented sport here is windsurfing: Alana is recommended for windsurf on the strength of the winds in the bay, and nothing equivalent exists for kites.
No kite school, no marked launch lane, no rescue operator and no local kite rule were found. The beach itself is well covered: organized sections, beach bars, free parking, showers and general water sports.
On an empty day that makes an easy freeride or light-wind session; in July and August it makes a problem, because swimmers, sunbeds and the watersports concession take the width and the 200 m separation rules take the rest.
Parts of the water entry have small pebbles or rocks even though most of the beach is sand, so walk it before you ride it. Summer water is about 26 C, winter about 12 C, and an isothermal suit is required from 15 October to 15 May.

Character

mixed

Nea Iraklitsa carries a kitesurfing forecast point, and Alana is recommended for windsurfing because of the winds in the bay. Whether the kite wind is reliable day to day is undocumented.
May to October is the general Greek kite season. It is not a reliability claim for Nea Iraklitsa.

The model reads 3% of days at its best month, which does not sit with the season this record states. The figures are kept and drawn as hatching so no wind colour can be read off them, and the ringed months are the ones riders name.

riders' months

Riders and schools name these months. The model reads lower here, and both are shown rather than averaged.

Modelled from the operational forecast archive at 1.5–7 km (2023-2024), daylight hours only, not a ground station: it resolves thermal, lake and valley winds far better than coarse reanalysis but still tends to understate a strong local thermal. A windy day has at least three consecutive daylight hours at 12 knots or more. The typical daily max and the direction are columns of the table above, month by month. Highlighted months are the riding season from the spot record.

The water

Type

sea

Standing depth

Shallow water is reported at Alana/Nea Iraklitsa, with a gradual entry on much of the beach; exact standing-depth extent for kiting is not documented.

Tides

Small tidal range at nearby Kavala, commonly around 0.1-0.3 m in tide-table examples.

Temperature

26°C summer · 12°C winter

Wetsuit

Usually boardshorts/swimsuit in high summer; Greek kitesurf rules require an isothermal/wetsuit for 15 October to 15 May.

13–28°C water
A long sandy bay with organized sections, beach bars, water sports and calm shallow water. Sand and shingle, or small pebbles and rocks, turn up at parts of the entry.

Your level

beginnerintermediatenot for advanceds here
Shallow, sandy and calm water is easy on a learner. There is no kite school, no rescue and no launch corridor on record, so the legal spacing from swimmers decides whether a beginner can ride at all.

Rescue

No dedicated kite rescue is on record. Greek rules require rescue support for offshore wind and stronger-wind days.

Use the wider Alana sections only, with clear separation from swimmers, beach bars, watersports users and any buoyed bathing area. Water sports and windsurfing are confirmed here; no marked kitesurf corridor was found.

Rules & access
2026: Greek national rules require the kitesurf area to be clear of rocks, reefs, piers, buoys, fishing nets and other obstacles, and prohibit kitesurfing on beaches classed as popular or heavily frequented, before sunrise or after sunset, within 200 m of swimmers, within 200 m of the shoreline unless outside the bathing buoys, and near ports, marinas and fishing shelters unless local distance reductions apply. No Nea Iraklitsa-specific permit, corridor or ban was found.

Access rules drift faster than anything else we hold — check locally, and propose an edit if this has changed.

Rider tips

  • Walk the beach before you rig; in high summer the sunbeds and swimmers can leave no legal launch width at all.
  • Treat it as an opportunistic light-wind spot until a forecast and a local rider agree there is enough wind.
  • Keep away from the small harbour side and outside any buoyed bathing area.
  • Ask Friend Watersports or the lifeguards about restrictions on the day before you pump.
