The spot

The launch that matters at Nin is Ždrijac Beach, on the sand spit inside the Nin lagoon; Queen's Beach, Kraljičina plaža, sits on the same sandy system and the two names get blended into one spot.

Water conditions and wind

Inside the spit the water is shallow, flat and standable for a long way, and on the far side of the sand it is open Adriatic chop, so lessons, freeride and stronger sessions all fit on one beach. Summer riding runs on the NW Maestral. NE Bora/Bura is stronger and gustier and a different day out, and whether the best months are the warm summer or the windier shoulder and off-season is still argued.

Season and alternatives

The kite zone is marked near the middle of Ždrijac, and in July and August you share its edges with swimmers and family beach traffic. The Kiteboarding Croatia and Windsurfing Croatia base works off the sand there with a May-October season. Zadar Airport is a short transfer away, and a no-wind day goes to Nin old town, the saltworks, the Queen's Beach mud or Zadar.

Raw monthly averages of 5-9 kt exclude thermal wind and read far too low for a summer afternoon, and a seasonal figure of 22.8-25.7 kt reads too high for the same beach. Ride the 11-19 kt band and treat the rest as unconfirmed.

Often clean/steady in Maestral and lagoon-friendly when side-on or side-shore; Bora/Bura from Velebit can be stronger and gustier and requires experience.

The school on Ždrijac is open every day from May to late October, and that is the practical travel season: warm water, thermal Maestral, beach services.

The marked kite zone is supervised by the school on the beach, which is open every day from May to late October; nothing is published about cover for independent riders outside those hours or outside the season.

2026: the kite area on Plaža Ždrijac is split into marked zones by the on-beach school. The red zone is for bathers only - no kiting, no launching, no landing. The yellow zone belongs to the school and independent riders must stay out of it while a lesson is running. Outside both zones kiting is allowed.

Right-of-way and distance rules

The posted right-of-way rules are: a rider entering the water has priority over one coming in to land, starboard tack has right of way, the upwind rider keeps the kite high and the downwind rider low, a jump needs 50 m clear downwind and 30 m clear upwind, and riders must keep a safe distance from the shore and from swimmers.

Gear and permits

Rental gear is only released to riders holding a kite card or a VDWS level 6 licence, or after an instructor assesses them. No municipal permit, fee or club membership for independent riders was found. Croatian port-order rules in force since 2005 also forbid sailing a board inside the marked water of an organised beach, at port entrances and in narrow shipping passages.

Ask the school where the red bathers-only zone and the yellow school zone are before you rig; those boundaries move with the season.
Learn and warm up inside the lagoon. The open side of the spit builds chop fast.
Carry your kite card or VDWS level 6 licence if you plan to rent, or expect an instructor to check you first.
Do not read July and August as the strong-wind months: on non-thermal counts they are the two weakest of the year here, and the beach is at its fullest.
Give jumps room. The posted local rule is 50 m clear downwind and 30 m clear upwind.
Bring booties for the urchins and the shallow edges, and check which side of the sand you are on: the lagoon reads cross-onshore in the Maestral, the Queen's Beach side reads side-offshore.
